Old Firm Colts in L2

Why dont Rangers or Celtic start 2 new team brands (Glasgow Bears and Glasgow Bhoys for eg) at the bottom of the lowland pyramid. Build a small terraced stadium for them to play their reserve/youth teams.

They would probably attract decent crowds and if they rised through the leagues nobody could complain. Could even be a money spinner for them with different branded merchandise for them to sell. Ownership rules could be a problem but that probably would be overcome easily with a decent lawyer.

Shouldn't Sevco have done this when they used a dead club's name?

it's a terrible idea with all that extra interest it would create,  money they are offering and  ofcourse we all  love playing the same side 4/5 or even 6 times per season. In all honesty it's got to be worth considering despite the usual old firm envy / small team chip on shoulder  mentality.

I honestly don't think anyone who suggests this understands football. They might watch football and support a team, but they don't actually understand the fabric of the game and what makes it tick.

Competitive football is about two teams turning up to beat each other. Those clubs each represent a city, town, district, country or cause. People are emotionally involved in that. Those eleven players are representing one of those things. For ninety minutes, you invest everything in it and switch off from reality. It matters. There can be a car load of away fans, but what is representing them on the park matters as much to them as Real Madrid does go their fans.

When you introduce reserve teams, you bring in a situation where one team cares. Sure, you'll have fans of the big club club liking to see the youngsters do well, but does it hurt them when they lose? Do they feel elated when they win? No.

If you bring forward a situation where a team can win a league and nobody is emotionally invested, nobody is having the party of their lives and, frankly, nobody cares, what's the point?

yeh its great playing the same team 19 times per season

If this goes through then after 50 years of supporting my club I would walk away from football.  Equally the proposal of clubs being attached to a senior team and getting 5 or 6 of their players is a non starter for me.  I want my club to develop their own players and not be  a nursery for the bigger teams. If this happens all sporting integrity is lost.

I know we have used a lot of loan players recently but you wonder where their heart is when it comes to an all out battles to avoid relegation etc.  Signed players knowing that relegation etc will cost them but loaners knowing that they will be going back to their own team.

are most players not on one year deals these days

Suspect someone would be wearing a half and half scarf at Borough Briggs, should this monstrosity ever happen.

Found out today that if any other Premiership club wanted to introduce a colt team as part of this the the rangers "innovation" project, they would need to start in the HL or LL and not be given access to the SPFL automatically.

Strange how this 8 year old outfit are redesigning the future of Scottish football, yet will not be able to guarantee their own continuing (?) ability to survive unaided by the SPFL in the longer term.

They should be unequivocally told tae GTF.

The suggestion for others to start in the HL or LL just show the complete disregard to lower leagues. They just conveniently forget that there are (from 2020/21) 3 feeder leagues to the LL. So which teams will be relegated from the LL or denied promotion to it in order to make space for those colts?

I must have missed the huge interest in the Irn Bru/Tunnock's Cup. The interest was so high, the TV company who had the rights to show games involving Celtic and Rangers Colts started to not take up their options to show the games. It was so high that crowds were measured in the tens at some games with youth team players, and some fans actively boycotted those games. The extra interest, if it did come would just involve even more column inches devoted to these two horrible football clubs. Three pages about their senior team, a page about the youths and a page between all the other clubs in the lower divisions. No thanks.

 money they are offering and

The bribe you mean? Peanuts to them and given that some smaller clubs have fans so against it they'll refuse to buy season tickets while the Police will no doubt start to want to suddenly get along to Ochilview, Central Park and Cliftonville after years of police free games, this money will soon be even less impressive than the measly amount they are "offering".

ofcourse we all  love playing the same side 4/5 or even 6 times per season.

Most clubs will still be playing the same sides 4 or more times a season of course but while that isn't ideal for many, 4 competitive games against teams that are trying to win, are battling for points to win a title/make the play-offs/avoid relegation, games that are real 6-pointers at either end of the table, games that mean something because a former player or manager is now at the other club, games where there is a bit of an atmosphere even with a small crowd - these are what football fans generally want to see. Games against kids who don't care if they win or lose as long as they get experience, games where the manager can try new things because he knows he's not going to get sacked if he loses that week, games where there the players are the kids not deemed good enough to stay at their parent club or go out on loan, games where there are maybe a handful of visiting fans if any and most of them will be the family of the players? I'd rather play the same team 8 times in the first scenario than just twice in the second.

In all honesty it's got to be worth considering

Why? It's stupid and it won't help the Scottish League or the Scottish National Team.

despite the usual old firm envy / small team chip on shoulder  mentality.

Nothing to do with envy, as seen by the number of sensible Old Firm* fans who are also against it.

But yeah, great post.

No surprise that some chump from Elgin is salivating at the thought of finally getting to see their big team in action even if it would be a load of U21s.

Just as important as folk speaking out against the proposals IMO, is actively rinsing anyone who speaks out in favour.

So well done and thank you for that excellent post.

Brechin City stated yesterday that they are voting for the present 12-10-10-10 set up ...............or  the 14-10-10-10  alternative if the premier clubs prefer a 14 club set up.
