If anyone has any doubts about how competitive the 18 team Highland League is, Lossiemouth beat Brora 4-1 tonight, Fort William drew 2-2 with Clachnacuddin and Keith beat Forres 3-2. Fcuk 10/10.

It was at first a truer Highland League - founded in 1893, the first members were exclusively from Inverness, Nairn and Elgin shires.

First team from Banffshire (now part of Moray) did not appear until 1909 in the shape of Buckie, then Keith in 1924 and Deveronvale in 1938... First team from Aberdeenshire - excluding a couple of brief appearances from Aberdeen's reserves - did not appear until Fraserburgh in 1922, Huntly in 1928 and Peterhead in 1931.

Brora became the first team from Sutherland in 1963; it was as late as 1986 that Aberdeen first gained proper representation in the shape of Cove; plus Caithness had to wait until Wick in 1994.

For many decades the Aberdeenshire League held a separate sway to the east.

how did Aberdeen's reserves get on?

Think there was under 100 at Strathspey Thistle yesterday.

Was closer to 60 when we played them last season. Probably one of the poorest crowds I have seen in over 30 years, was at a Lossie/Vale game at Grant Park a few seasons back which was closer to 50, but Scotland were playing that day, same kick off time as well. Have seen crowds as low as 150 at Vale/Buckie games.

Wick Academy have an average home support of between 450 and 500 home game against Brora is usually close to 1,000

Wick have always been well supported can remember when they were getting home crowds of well over a 1000 when they first came into the league Locos were the same. Was a decent sized home support when we were up this season, wicks always one of the better away days, locals always make us feel welcome. Would say the top two away days are Rothes and Wick.

Didn't bother betting on the HL today as all the games seemed like foregone conclusions with crap odds. Then Strathspey Thistle draw at home to Cove and Nairn pump Wick away 5-1!  And Lossie beat Keith 4-1 which surprised me.

A few shocks in there! Fort William kept it real though...

That's some result for Nairn away to Wick.  One of those random ones that happen once a season where a top side gets absolutely ruined by one of the shite teams.

Nairn have got some new money in, found a new sponsor after their old one bolted in the summer, and have been getting new players in. Wick are one of the hardest teams to predict, up and down like a yoyo. Think they must have a few players working offshore or something.

I hadn't realised they were good again money-wise.  I heard the MacIntosh brothers of Narden had pulled out and thought they were fucked.  But yep, Wick are a strange one, seem to always be just not in the top 3 or 4 teams each season.

A Wick player got man of the match.

This is probably just a consequence of who votes for MOM. At Inverurie Locos I believe that this in corporate hospitality make up the majority of voters and convention is to vote for a home player regardless of result.

Took in the Vale/Broch match, first half was not that bad for a Vale fan, 2nd half was painful. Contender for goal of season from Watt, apart from that we had nothing much to shout about, broch better team on the day and deserved the victory. Big game against Nairn next, would be good to get a good cup run, our loyal fans who have stood by the team this season deserve something to shout about, could next week be the turning point.
