He also believes in UFOs, so his assertions should be treated with caution, but it makes for entertaining interviews:

Without entering into the actual alien argument myself I do think that it is a major news story which sees a politician who has served in the extremely high capacities, which Hellyer has, making such claims. Surely this is news of a stature which deserves more mainstream attention? If only to have experts debunk him.

The general view in Canada is that he is a few cards short of the full deck, so he doesn't tend to get anywhere near a television studio nowadays. He was into his 80s before he started the UFO thing, so it's understandable enough that there may have been a mental deterioration. It would be a different story if he was 20 or 30 years younger. As for RT, I guess it's anything for ratings and you would never see CNN doing anything like that. Oh wait, maybe you would:

You will almost never see a serious attempt to debunk credible people with these beliefs - it's much easier to dismiss them out of hand as loonies.

Sources? I've never seen anything suggesting this opinion of him. Unless it's a general 'he believes in UFOs therefore is nuts'.

Tbf, I'm not sure why anyone would see any benefit in devoting time to debunking these people's beliefs.

Exactly.  His beliefs are so patently insane that any attempt to inject logical reasoning is futile.  The guy is a loonball, and it serves everyone well from leaving things at that.

That said, it's probably one of the most salient interviews ever conducted on RT.

Eliminate the impossible and whatever is left, no matter how improbable, is the truth.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jan/07/german-police-quash-breitbart-story-of-mob-setting-fire-to-dortmund-church

Quote

Stray fireworks did start a small blaze, but only on netting covering scaffolding on the church and it was put out after about 12 minutes, the paper reported. The roof was not on fire and the church is not Germany’s oldest.

Dortmund police on Thursday said its officers had handled 185 missions that night, sharply down from 421 the previous year. The force’s leader judged the night as “rather average to quiet”, in part thanks to a large police presence.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily said Breitbart had used exaggerations and factual errors to create “an image of chaotic civil war-like conditions in Germany, caused by Islamist aggressors”.

It said the article “may be a foretaste” of what is to come before parliamentary elections expected in September as some websites spread “misinformation and distortion in order to diminish trust in established institutions”.

Justice minister Heiko Maas warned in mid-December that Germany would use its laws against deliberate disinformation and that freedom of expression did not protect “slander and defamation”.

The attacks in Berlin, Orlando, Nice, Brussels and Paris were all too real, unfortunately, so there is really no need to make anything up to whip up a populist frenzy at the moment. The problem the left has is that their top politicians are too paralyzed by a culture of political correctness to be able to address these issues in a manner that a large portion of their traditional support base finds acceptable and that is what has created the niche for Trump, UKIP, AfD and Le Pen etc. But let's blame it all on an obscure American website rather than facing up to that reality.

In a German context the SPD should be the main alternative to Angela Merkel, if everything were unfolding normally. They are currently hovering at just over 20% in the opinion polls, because of the rise of AfD and their Nigel Farage style politics. Not good at all and there really needs to be a rethink from those on the left of centre on how to deal with stuff like this.

Washington Post, purveyors of the 'Fake News' propaganda meme yet repeatedly caught out lying and spreading false narratives, publishes an article saying it's time to stop using the term because 'conservatives' are starting to use the same meme to fight back.

Cowardice of the highest order once again from 'Progressives'.

I'm not surprised fake news is a big deal in a world where people get their news from "The Lad Bible."

Hint: get your news from a credible source and you'll be fine.

And check with RT, Fox and Al Jazeera if you're suspicious, and wherever possible original sources like court statements. Being sceptical is healthy, but believing the likes of the Guardian are lying to us ALL the time and Russia Today the same, is silly. The best thing about the internet apart from illegal downloading and porn is that you can instantly cross check the facts of a story.
