I'm a big fan of this painting I saw in a restaurant in Berat (where the colour "shiny red" was invented), no idea of the artist though. Frankie S
On 16/04/2017 at 22:28, MONKMAN said: The Wedding at Cana - Paolo Veronese It can be found directly opposite the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, and in my opinion is infinitely more impressive. The sheer size and detail of the painting is almost unbelievable. That's an absolute beauty. Agree that the Mona Lisa is slightly underwhelming, and that the sheer scale of the Wedding Feast at Cana is overwhelming. As was often the case in these days, the artist (Veronese) included a depiction of himself in the painting, as one of the band of musicians playing at the feast, alongside fellow artists Titian, Bassano and Tintoretto (see detail). Interestingly there are a host of other, non-contemporaneous, historical figures at the feast, including Suleiman the Magnificent, Mary I, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Eleanor of Austria, Archbishop of Canterbury Reginald Pole and Frances I of France. Shotgun
I've just heard about the upcoming fully hand-painted* animated film which tells the story of Van Gogh through 120 of his paintings and the characters in them. The web site is worth a look for fans of Vincent's work. Loving Vincent * The world's first, apparently.

Fifth highest price for an Australian painting. I remember on the original TFI Friday they always had an "Unfeasibly tall old woman" stood on the stairs when they annouced those strange acts. *That's me on a thread about art.
Reggie Perrin
The Little Street by Vermeer. Such a simple subject but the composition just works wonderfully.
Eednud
The Pictorial Arts: Crete by Norman Lindsay. He seemed to paint a lot of nudes and worth watching 1994 film "Sirens", just for educational purposes only though.

Eednud
This isn’t quite on topic but I like this. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-21/small-town-hopes-silo-art-will-become-drawcard/8969298 Haven’t seen the silos in link but have seen another lot in South Australia at Coonalpyn
Eednud
I'll be able to see Claude Monet's "The Magpie" when "The Clours the Musee d'Orsay" exhibition hits the Art Gallery of South Australia from March-July next year. Apparently 65 works including Monet, Manet, Renoir and Cezanne will be on show. Edited November 5, 2017 by Eednud
milton75
That should be great. Musee d'Orsay is probably my favourite gallery, and the stuff they'll send will doubtless be excellent.

TheLip69
Another favourite. Apparently the scene at the bottom of the painting is the view from Dali's house. For some reason this painting was regularly slashed. Only in Glasgow... It's called Christ of St John of the Cross I believe. Weirdly, a copy of this used to hang in Bellshill YMCA.
Eednud
Saw this in an article about marine pilots on the ABC website. It is by English artist John Stobart and it is how he imagined Sydney Harbour was in 1872.

Writing this in the city named after you (backwards) and at a superficial glance wondered if the painting was, in fact, Dundee.
Eednud
It’s not quite the Silvery Tay. What are you doing there? This is Dundee but no idea who painted it.
