I doubt it, they may make noises but the Venezuelan basin is not the big player any longer in the area and the US does not import a huge figure from the country anymore, it may surprise some that about 15 years back British Gas were a big player there with some big block purchases , the area between Venezuela and Trinidad has always been a high producing area for over a 100 years. Before it was swallowed up Trinico was the oldest British Oil Company, so the Brits have always been well represented in the area. The major player now in the north east of SA and Venezuela's neighbour is Guyana, Mobil and other American companies have invested heavily over the last 15 years and already production and future figures are very high, country access for equipment and personnel is straightforward as the Government is highly receptive and accommodating and overseas awareness is low. It may surprise some that Tullow Oil the Irish exploration and production company were one of the first company's drilling offshore Guyana.

You know they're wanting to get stuck in when Pompeo starts claiming Iran & Hezbollah have Venezuelan cells. It's not really about oil supplies to the US either, it's about controlling the supply, profiting from it, and denying it to potential adversaries. Bolton would invade the UK if he thought it would hasten Trump's agenda. American interventionism is basically a 20th century phenomenon, but he's as hawkish as they come.

The Americans have quiet controlled little Guyana with major reserves so no need for Venezuela.

He will become an irrelevance once Trump is binned.

Would argue it's more about killing the Bolivarian Revolution for good. 4 hours ago, Detournement said: They are opposed to the the concept of natural resources being owned by a state which is majority non white on principle. Yeah, this is it. If the Bolivarian Rev succeeds then it's a contagion the US and big oil companies need to worry about.
welshbairn
Does anyone think Modera won the 2018 election fairly? Don't know much about it but Wiki is quite damning, not least by banning all but Chavistas and some evangelical smuggler from running against him. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Venezuelan_presidential_election Edited February 7, 2019 by welshbairn
Detournement
You can't take Wiki seriously on a subject like this. The right wing opposition boycotted the election, no doubt with an eye to this turn of events.

NotThePars
Only after their leaders were banned from running.I think those leaders that were banned were either threatening to, or actively supporting, terrorist attacks. Weren’t observers acknowledging the elections in Venezuela have been free and fair?
Detournement
All the observers said the elections were free and fair. Our media also like to erase the racial element from their coverage. The wonderful opposition occasionally set black people on fire but you won't hear much about that now. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-40157729

D Angelo Barksdale
Maduro requested UN election observers and the opposition begged them not to come as it would add legitimacy to his victory.
