The Official Former President Trump thread

Trump’s strategy for months now has been to frame the Democrat nominee as a DNC stitch up against Sanders. Anyone who thinks that Sleepy Joe winning the nomination doesn’t have Trump rubbing his hands with glee hasn’t been paying attention. Sanders is consistently voted one of the most popular politicians in America and has consistently outpolled Trump in head to head polling. That Trump will now use Biden essentially being anointed to keep people home in November and outflank the Dems from the left in their response to the Coronavirus is so obvious that I’m sure I’ve even seen one of the 700 Pod Save America Jon clones stressing out about it.

I mean imagine being the nominally left party in America and being framed as the means testers for a pandemic response. The Democrats want to be a rump party even more than the Labour centre.

Not a rats chance in hell of becoming President, and any Democrat with an ounce of sense should be breathing a sigh of relief that Biden will at least have a reasonable chance of toppling the orange baboon.

That's just not true, infact its the opposite of the way things are.  All polling shows now and in 2016 Sanders would beat Trump.  Biden will not.

While that may be true, Biden beats Trump by a wider margin in all of the swing states, which is entirely all the Dems need,

Latest polls, for what it's worth. They also said Clinton was way ahead too.

They weren't far wrong, the national polling didn't really matter much though but Hillary did have a comfortablish vote lead over Trump in that sense which held.

If you go through the same website and look state by state in 2016, there wasn't a huge amount of data and places like Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania were actually quite close when taken by decent pollsters in the 'A' category, 538 gave their last projection as being a 33% chance that Trump had of victory, in 2012 they had Romney at like 15% the day before. We were all just really distracted with the overall figure that it come as a much bigger shock than it should have been.

Looking at the same places now, it's still a toss up. Biden needs to flip two of them.

Yup. The polls were extremely accurate in 2016. This year, it boils down to enough of the electorate flipping over to Biden to flip two states. A high turn out would help him; whereas for Bernie it would be mainly new voters, for Biden it’s a mix of never Trumpers, blacks who didn’t turn out at all in 2016, and disaffected Republicans.

Any movement relying on a youth vote is doomed.

There's 200 Never Trumpers in America and they all have columns in the New York Times and even half of them are beginning to thaw their Never Trump positions. I admire the optimism for Joseph Robinette Biden but it's not only about winning, it's about undoing the massive damage the first Trump term did and that senile corrupt republican in all but name doesn't have the fight nor interest to do anything meaningful with his term if he beats Trump. It's the last gasp of a party with nothing to offer but bland platitudes and nostalgia for the less-shitty days of Obama.

Or it could be that politicizing a health crisis may leave a sour taste in the eyes of a public who can see what a ripsnorting Roger Hunt of it the adminstration are making of it fairly clearly anyhoo.

If they've a sour taste in their eyes they've probably got Covid-19, says an expert epidemioligist/doctor. (Delete as appropriate depending which you trust the more/panics you less.)

Exactly.

The election will be decided by around 5 or 6 states. Biden seems to be ahead of Trump in all of them, and that's all that matters.

The public health preparedness and response framework that Congress has put in place and that the Trump Administration is actively implementing today is helping to protect Americans. Over the years, this framework has been designed to be flexible and innovative so that we are not only ready to face the coronavirus today but new public health threats in the future.
