The Official Former President Trump thread

Trump is going to get acquitted.

The whole thing was a joke. Pelosi didn’t want to impeach Trump. She said so in October but she was forced to by pressure of internet influencers to push ahead with it.

All she has done is make her party look weak and reinforce Trump’s base by making him look like a victim. The influencers who didn’t really under what impeachment was have moved onto something else.

If she didn't then the young vote that they count on wouldn't turn out.

Mind if he gets acquitted then the redneck vote will be enthused too. Just have to see which one gets out more.

Right. She’s playing the long game. Trumpy boy was never going to get impeached. But several GOP senators have basically given their seats up to the democrats. This is all about November.

A wee bit of semantics, but he has been impeached, and will forever remain impeached; he just won't be convicted. However, it means he cannot be pardoned by any future President should he come up against any Federal charges when he leaves office, by whatever way he leaves it. In real terms, it doesn't mean much - however let's say Biden gets the Presidency, returns the DOJ to the non-politicized department it should be and the DOJ slap a suit on Trump alleging he's been laundering Russian money for years. And years. And years. If Uncle Joe's 'better' instincts are to pardon him to 'bring the nation together' then he's on to plums. Bob Reich explains it better than me - https://www.newsweek.com/trump-impeached-house-literally-unpardonable-1475096

The John Bolton thing caused a little bit of a stir, but the ball went up on the slates last night when Susan Collins said she would vote for witnesses and subpoenas; she only takes a stand when she knows it won't be of any consequence. See also her histrionics before voting to confirm rapey Bertie. Cuntress.

If Biden becomes President the established principle of excusing past sins will definitely continue.  That will ensure that he himself doesn’t have to deal with any ‘issues’ down the line.

Presidential pardons of all kinds are at odds with the principles that are supposed to underpin US democracy.

It's also worth noting the SDNY is a Federal body, so should there be any charges pressed against Trump himself as a result of their investigations into him, he also cannot be pardoned, although anyone associated (Jr, Kushner et al) could be. If the Manhattan DA's office launches anything, that would be up to the State Governor to issue any pardon, and I'm fairly sure Andrew Cuomo would personally drive anyone in Trumplandia to Riker's Island.

The best thing impeachment will possibly do is letting loads of the Democratic establishment take their eyes off the wheel while Bernie surged ahead to the nomination

I’m with you. Unfortunately the Republican never Trumpers, who are really the ones who will win or lose the election, won’t turn out for a man they deem a dangerous socialist.

I’m all for one term of Biden - Republican-lite though he is - and then Bernie/Warren in 2024.

Bernie/Bloomberg would settle a few nerves, stranger things have happened. :1eye Biden just looks like a disaster waiting to happen, don't think he'd make it through the campaign without sleep walking naked into the press room or something, and offering a wrestle.

The will-at-that-point-be-82 year old Sanders? What a race that will be.

There’s literally nothing Biden could do that would come close to the behaviour of Trump. I think the American electorate have proven that they are quite happy to vote for complete loonball, so long as they promise nice stuff or blame the right targets.

They cancelled the poll because one Buttgeig campaign employee says he wasn't quoted.

Totally normal. Nothing to do with Bernie.

They cancelled it because one of the people doing the polling didn't offer Buttgeig as an option.
