Several states now have laws where the standard for "self-defence" is that you feel threatened. So if somebody approaches you to ask for directions and you don't like the look of them...say, they look a bit black, for example...you're entirely justified in opening fire, so long as you're informed enough to say "I felt threatened" rather than be specific about your prejudices.
