So I have a virtual reality headset.

Virtual reality gaming is tipped to be the next big thing in gaming.  My mate picked up a htc vive and after having a quick go of it I instantly wanted one.  So I picked one up on Monday.  First the negatives.  The vive and the rift cost a fair whack.  I think the PlayStation one will be much cheaper, but I play on pc.  It's a new tech and there are still a few software bugs to kink out.  But if you want it on pc, you'll be shelling out over £500 for a rift and £700 for a vive which has more features.... you can walk about the world and you get these two controllers that you can see in game.  But it's a fairly big outlay.

But Jesus Christ it's unreal.  It's amazing how it tricks your brain into believing your game is real.  Objects and people have real depth and presence.  The first wow moment came when I was playing this castle defence demo and I ran forward in real life, peered down to shot an arrow  at this wee guy storming my castle and I genuinely thought I was going to fall of my castle.  I've spent the last two nights playing a realistic shooting game called onward.  You have to unholster your gun and manually reload it etc.  Unlike standard fps games you have to move around your environment yourself and be spatially aware of where your gun is.  I probably looked like a utter twat in real life as I crawled forward on my carpet and waved my hands about in the air.  But in game I was sneaking up and moving my rifle over some rocks to get a good shot at an enemy.  Unlike 3D gaming or the wii motion stuff, this won't be a flash in the pan.  Here is a wee video on someone playing onward to give you an idea.

How many times have you ran into your living room wall so far?

Quite a few.  You set up a play area and when you get near a wall a virtual grid will pop up.  Sometimes a bit to late though.

Thats a bold prediction. I've tried VR, albeit it with a cheap android version and found it uncomfortable and made me feel sick.

As long as there is a need to wear a bulky headset VR will remain a pretty niche form of gaming - far more so than motion stuff.

The most likely scenario in the long term is that motion control, 3D and VR will all come together into on

People have said that about a lot of things though.  It'll end up being only as good as the uses for it.  Bit much calling the Wii a flash in the pan - it was absolutely huge and pioneering.  There's a reason why Sony (unsuccessfully) tried to copy it, because they saw games like Wii bowling tearing strips off their flashy games.  I did a bit of work in uni around the actual wiimotes and seeing what else they can do, and they were brilliant pieces of kit.  Of course Nintendo have now fucked about with the formula and have fallen by the weyside, but given how successful they were, it's hardly a flash in the pan, particularly mentioned alongside 3D gaming.

The Kinect is a good example.  When that came out, it was absolutely wonderful tech-wise.  No need to hold anything, or strap anything to your person, you just stood in front of it and you were in the game.  Unfortunately, no-one really believed in it, particularly developers, and it pretty much died.  Ably supported by Microsoft turning it into an Orwellian spyglass for the tinfoil hatters with the Xbox One.

It's all about making the killer app.  The Kinect had some great minigames, but not much else.  At the moment it seems like VR is the same.  I've watched plenty of youtubers playing them, and it does look great fun, but nothing that makes it worth paying £700 for, for me at least.  Plus, as Mr X says, there's still a decent amount of people who really struggle to use things like this due to feeling motion sick.

@MrX @forameus. Both make very good points.  The first night after playing VR I felt weird.  Not motion sick but certainly not right.  I know a guy that bought a early test version of the rift and he could not stand it.  He felt ill.  Apparently it's due to the slower motion sensors on the older models, there's no input lag on the consumer versions.   That certainly goes a big way.  I suppose the game you play will a huge factor too.

Both Facebook, Sony, Htc and valve have sunk bucketloads into this tech.  I know that aside from gaming that  Mark zuckerburg was talking about using it as a medium to visit measums etc or having front row seats to a big fight or game.  That idea sounds very cool.  As regards to a killer app I know the new resident evil game for the PlayStation will use vr.  Plus Valve have their huge titles to use like half life and counter strike or a left for dead.  But yeah it's a kind of chicken and egg scenario right now.

@BigFatTabbyDave

how does this work?  Just asking for a friend...

No idea; I've not got the cash for such a thing, alas. I just saw a story about Pornhub opening a VR section a while back, and Googled 'Pornhub VR' when I saw your post. The videos are the stuff of nightmares if you don't have the headset

Aside from that, perhaps one of Throbber's how-to videos might help?

Oh don't worry, totally get how it would be a brilliant piece of tech.  I loved the potential of the wiimotes, and the Kinect was even better.  The possibilities for this are massive, but I just think saying that it's not going to be a flash in the pan is exactly what people said about the previous ones.

The Resident Evil one is interesting definitely.  I think if there's a game that can mix the usual control schemes - so for games that usually allow you to move around a world - and can add VR without taking you away too much.  A lot of the current games see you stuck in place for the most part.  Although they're finding very smart ways of not making this matter (either just building the game around a fixed point or teleportation), if they can get that kind of thing but still have you able to wander around like you can in most games, and make you feel like you're actually walking through, then it'll be amazing.  That wouldn't really work in a home setting though, needing some kind of treadmill or similar.

That onward game lets you move using the trackpad in the controller.  You can also move about in real life too.

Im not convinced by that, to be honest. I agree with you and @forameus that the potential is exciting but, as he said, the potential for other things was there too but never realised.

What happened to Microsofts (I think?) projector thing they were working on. IIRC it was supposed to project the "screen" onto the walls of your room creating a VR environment without having to wear goggles. I thought that had more potential

Obviously there's a world of difference but I've only tried a wee 8 quid effort out of B&M. It's undoubtedly cool but I just cant see it becoming mainstream. People want to sit with a controller in their hand and control the things on a screen in front of them. Simple.

Ps my head was thumping after about 30 seconds but I'll put that down to it being cheap tat rather than the real deal.

Used my mates HTC vive tonight, words cant describe, it perfectly mimics proper depth perception and completely immerses you in the game. I fucking loved it, played a few games, some of them are relatively simple in concept, one was a base defense where you stop attackers breaking your door down with a bow and arrow, nothing spectacular in scope but how the device perfectly mimics your movements with the controller's is astounding, after a while you forget you are holding controllers and feel like you are holding the actual weapon. Also played a Zombie shooter, you start with a handgun, can find other weapons, try to survive, again simple idea but so brilliantly implemented. From having to manually reload your gun, to getting screwed over in a panic because you forgot to pull the slide back on the gun after reloading. Very satisfying and again the immersion is like nothing i have experienced. He got his on a finance deal from GAME, told me he is paying £75 a month for 10 month's, pretty good all things considering.
