If pushed I'd probably back the Tiges but it's really competitive, whoever finishes 5th (probably West Coast) could do some serious damage. Port have been the best team so far but how they handle finals remains to be seen. Brisbane need to improve their goalkicking to win it I think.

AFL high-flyer Shaun Smith has won a concussion damages payout after suffering brain injuries while playing football.

Smith has received a $1.4 million concussion damages payout, as revealed by the Herald Sun, after he was knocked out multiple times during his career with Melbourne and North Melbourne.

The 51-year-old was reportedly paid the money on Thursday after his insurance company, MLC, recognised he had suffered a “total and permanent disablement” (TPD) after the head knocks.

The decisions comes just weeks after it was revealed analysis from the late Danny Frawley’s brain revealed the much-loved Saint was suffering from Stage II CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).

AFL great Graham “Polly” Farmer was also diagnosed after his passing in 2019,

“This just proves that concussion is real – that we are not just making this stuff up. I’m only the tip of the iceberg,” Smith told the Herald Sun.

“There are so many others out there who are struggling and deserve to be looked after because it’s not like a knee injury where you walk around with a limp – it affects everything you do. The way you think and the way you act. It’s not the best.

“But hopefully this will help the others that are out there, too.

“I’m eternally grateful to Peter Jess. The guy has saved my life, really. Not just with the financial side of things but making me realise that I’m not stupid or going crazy.

“Everyone was sympathetic but Pete was like, ‘No, this is bulls**t’.”

However, according to veteran AFL agent Peter Jess, a number of current and former AFL players will be unable to qualify for a similar payout like Smith’s, due to the policies with the AFL’s main insurer AMP.

“This should be the game changer,” he told the Herald Sun.

“It means you have independent medical experts who say that you can be totally and permanently disabled as a result of multiple concussions suffered while playing AFL football."

“But if Shaun was insured with AMP he would not have been paid a cent.”

Jess explained he had acted for a former player who was unsuccessful due to the insurance with AMP.

An AMP spokesman told the Herald Sun: “We regularly review the insurance we provide to ensure levels of cover and definitions are consistent with industry standards, including recognising the physical nature of AFL football.”

I thought Port might do it this but year but not to be. I never thought as much of Brisbane but a shame to see them go out nonetheless.

I'll be supporting Geelong next week, I've gone right off the Tiges in recent months. I don't think many neutrals will want them to win another either.
