Time for champions league reconfiguration?

Recommended Posts

Why should big teams have to waste their time playing diddy teams in uncompetitive matches? Who wants to watch one sided pastings?

It's definitely time for a new format where there has to be greater selectivity in who gets to participate.

or they could look at introducing Worldwide rules that prevents the bigger Clubs hoarding the best talent in squads of 30 players plus!

What format would you suggest?

Id suggest a league of 10- 12 teams breakaway from everyone else.
Negotiate their own TV deal and retain the profits amongst themselves.
There should be little to no chance of teams being removed from the league or anyone else getting in- so 1 relegation space each year- if we eventually must have 2 relegation spaces then the second bottom team should be heavily protected in any play off format to minimise the chances of them losing their place.
The biggest two clubs should also be able to veto any new arrangements that might distribute cash more equally as well.

Think of the quality these elite teams could attract and the standard they would be able to play at if they weren't being held back from reaching their full potential playing poor sides in the domestic leagues like Granada, Alaves and Sunderland.

That's not really addressing the dross like Celtic, Legia Warsaw et al being in the Champions League though, is it?

Poor quality sides like Alaves who beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Nou Camp at the weekend???

They could do away with seeding in the groups and then split the cash by TV viewing numbers. When Bayern, Real, Barca and Juve get drawn in the same group they will still make millions more than anyone else despite 2 of them getting pumped out early. Celtic, Legia, BATE and Copenhagen not so much.

If they had a break away proper league where they only played each other above their national leagues it would. More games against better quality sides.

As an Airdrie fan you should know better.

Thinking of why the SPL was created in the first place and whom it wanted to keep out and protect the biggest clubs from having to play small clubs and therefore end up taking in less revenue. It has nothing to do with whether a club earned its place nor even the fans, its all about tv and the cash generator, the cash cow, the bigger slice of the cake. And also we remember how that worked out for those who didn't live within their means both in the SPL and below.

I don't see the Champions League as any different, its greed on a monumental scale. Plus where you have greed you have corruption, the two often go hand in hand. Corruption can bring down whole countries, bring down businesses, it could bring down UEFA and all the clubs that have bullied their way into running the show, just like a deck of cards.

It's only a matter of time before they amend the rules to allow Chinese teams  , most of whom we've never heard of , but have larger support than Baarcelona probably.

The champions league has got a wee bit stale over the last 5 or 6 years hasn't it? maybe longer ? a bit like most leagues with TV megabucks. The standard of teams and the quality of individual players can be amazing but many of the games themselves less so. There can either be big teams dishing out pumping to wee teams or 2 evenly matched teams nullifying each other rather than end to end action, obviously there are exceptions. The likes of celtic and co only get in via the champions route to keep the smaller associations from going off in the huff and pulling out completely. The current set up is so un balanced that I think a breakaway of 10-16 "super " clubs is inevitable, we've already seen how big clubs and big nations treat the Europa league, I'm pretty sure  that the likes of barcalona and Bayern munich already think they'r too good to bother with the likes of panathanikos.

The champions route will soon be done away with to stop that from happening, nobody other than fans of the benefiting clubs want it. as soon as tv viewing figures and revenue starts to slide action will be taken, some of these big European clubs are in eye watering debt, the kind that makes oldco rangers look like pennies, they cant afford for their revenue to drop so if they champions league in its current set up cant get them the revenue they need then something will have to give.

I wouldn't worry too much, the recent changes are all a sop to the big clubs or at least the big nations with big numbers of TVs and eventually I'm sure UEFA will find a way to have the group stages made up of 6-8 teams from the big 4 football nations (plus France) and everyone else scrabbling around in the Europa league

This. Any future changes to the CL won't be of a benefit to Celtic.

Teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus etc should be allowed colt teams in the Champions League, and it should be played in the summer

Or just work out which teams have the most money and award them the trophy at the start of the season. Save a lot of time that way.
