I wouldn’t let pesky things like facts get in the way.  That’ll never catch on when it doesn’t fit the agenda.

True but the euro has collapsed against the dollar as well. Its almost at parity now.

It's a complicated situation and anyone blaming solely brexit or solely Ukraine or solely the pandemic is talking shite. How much each different clusterfuck affects in percentage terms would be total guesswork. Like much of economics.

I always thought that the whole point of Pie and Bovril was to uncomplicate things that were complicated and allow people to talk shite.

It certainly works for me.  :thumsup2

I think we can safely say that the rapid increase in oil and gas prices from February, can be blamed on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This is true to a degree but it's the quantification that's not possible rather than determining  the direction of the effect.

I don't think you'll find anyone except a rabid ideologue like Minford who would say that Brexit is helping at all. Everyone says it makes things worse.

The only certainty is that we will never know the disastrous effects of Brexit because no Westminster party has the honesty or appetite to even begin to examine them, and the almost exclusively right-wing UK media will follow in lockstep.

People here need to realise that it's not just authoritarian regimes like Russia and China that can orchestrate news and information blackouts, and a study of UK form over the last century bears that out.

The masterminds behind leaving the EU must be delighted to have had Coronavirus and the Ukraine crisis to deflect from the damage their venture has caused. They're never going to be held to account for the vast gap between what they promised and reality.

Whether the government can complete the next phase remains to be seen. Dropping the ECHR to further crack down on human rights might be trickier, but they'll certainly give it their best shot, and I wouldn't bet against them. The Little Fascists Who Could.

It was always going to be difficult to demonstrate the downside of Brexit.

The mainstream Economic forecasts were for reduced growth leading to per capita income of typically 5-10% lower than what it would otherwise have been.

Not only is it very difficult to "prove" the counterfactual, it's a concept that seems to be beyond the understanding of a large part of the population and a very long and dull paragraph to read.

Also the other side are noisier and have less respect for accuracy so pretend that forecasts were for famines and civil unrest so they can say "remainers were wrong about the famine and civil unrest."

That's before the alternative excuses presented themselves.

The impact of Brexit has not been a good outcome for the general population, the pound is worthless against the Euro and USD making holidays vastly more expensive, young workers who normally would have found summer jobs in Europe now have to apply as per the Immigration rules for the country, long queues at French immigration for holiday makers where we can be asked about the purpose of our visit and the duration which is up to 90 days within a 180 day period.

With large scale promises of FANTASTIC trade deals with the likes of Australia which actually favours them and not us.

On the side of that Australia signed a free trade deal with the EU in 2018, and why not as the EU market is 10 times larger than the Uk's.

Any trade deal with the USA looking highly unlikely as they like Australia like big markets.

And lets not forget EU Custom clearance rules.

UK inflation at 9.4% while France is at 5.8%.

Over 400 Banks and Financial services companies have moved business over to the EU, either with staff partially or by a complete move, why shouldn't they, capitalists want to be where the action is in a big market

Now the tories and their misguided supporters will always say otherwise in that Brexit has been a great success and they will be backed up by the tory media, but what else can they say, we had the biggest trading market on our doorstep and we shut the door on that.

If you had a business would it make economic sense to locate down a backstreet with minimal footfall or would you better locate on the high street.

A total shambles engineered by little englander reese mogg clowns dreaming of their empire.

An mugs fell for it.

Fans of leaving the EU would likely sell that as a good thing, as it'll force people to holiday in Bognor Regis and Skegness. Or, even more fun, staying at home.

My favourite 'oh... I didn't think THAT was what it all meant' moment was when Priti Patel said that she would ensure that freedom of movement would be ended, she was actually talking about OUR freedom of movement being affected.

While it does look like the average £/€ rate post referendum is lower than like-referendum, it was low before the vote and is currently higher than it was in 2012.

I remember getting €1 for £1 (tourist rates) in about 2007-8.

I'd say that there's a very good chance that Brexit has weakened Sterling against the Euro but saying that the impact of Brexit is to make it virtually worthless is hyperbole and just not true.

I can't  disagree with the general gist of your post though.

Fact is that if Brexit was a major plus why are so many like myself, and that includes the majority of Scots who voted against it find it a disaster.

Reading through this thread pro brexiteers constantly attempt to shoot down any arguments against Brexit by remainers.

Yet they don't supply any major pluses/benefits that Brexit has delivered other than reese mogg little englanders beliefs that it stemmed immigration, which it hasn't if you consider the channel crossings, and that england is now in charge of it's laws instead of Brussels, which it isn't as they still have to conform with EU customs laws if they want to trade with the EU.

Truth be told it's a fuckin mess and the sooner we are back in with an Independent Scotland the better.

Let the little englanders wallow in their own stupidly contrived mess while the world gets on without them..

You've not been patient enough. It's coming. Any day now, the good news Brexit stories are on the way. We just need to wait long enough for all the good stuff to happen.

It does speak volumes that the people in favour of leaving the EU are still unable to spin even the smallest of stories into great benefits of Brexit. Eventually the UK will recover somewhat from the various shitshows like leaving the EU, Coronavirus, and the energy crisis - maybe before we're all dead - so you can guarantee that anything close to signs of a return to where we were financially will be trumpeted as due to Britain taking control. Look, we recovered eventually from this act of self-harm - surely that means it was worth doing in the first place?

Meanwhile the Brexiteers will be satisfied regardless, as the voters will feel that they've stopped dirty European immigrants flooding into their villages, and the architects are delighted to have the opportunity to separate us from European human rights legislation.
