Brexit slowly becoming a Farce.

A cursory glance at that report shows exports slightly higher than pre brexit, but the figures are on a different basis. Pre brexit we didn't actually have imports and exports to count but did have a reporting system for inter-state transfers of goods (intrastat). It's hard to say how accurate the reporting was and not everything was counted-low value consignments were excluded.

We now have actual imports and exports of goods to count.

The services figure is based on surveys, so has all the uncertainty that entails.

I can't quite see how things going to NI from mainland UK are treated or how stuff is counted going from NI over its land border.

As @welshbairn says, the biggest single increase is in fuel, which is hardly structural and quite unusual in that most countries don't have a domestic oil extraction industry to protect and fuel can go most places without  tarrifs. Also the price has increased by way more than inflation so there will be a big price component to this increase. A 150% increase where the price has doubled is something like a 25% increase in volume.

Like employment or growth data, this stuff is useful for seeing long term trends but looking at changes month by month is trying to find a signal in noise.

One trend is that our trade balance deficit is still increasing.

Maybe in five years or so we could draw some useful conclusion about how brexit is going from the headline stats but not yet.

Thanks for that.

Anyhow, hardly a ‘farce’.

Covid and Ukraine have made it difficult to isolate the effects of Brexit, I don't think anyone thinks it's been positive. Even arch Brexiteer Daniel Hannan has come round to saying we should have stayed in the single market, we've just introduced a whole new level of red tape and costs for no benefit.

I think he used to advocate leaving but staying in the Single Market. Something that was never, ever going to happen.

I agree that the trade figures aren't evidence of a farce.

Proposing legislation to override the government's own treaty, however, is farcial.

In real danger of underselling how ridiculous a situation it is. Gleefully delivered by a Prime Minister who seemingly knew absolutely nothing about what he was signing when it was obvious the Protocol would add barriers to intra-UK trade. They might well be right that it's a nonsense position to be in, but it's a position they willingly signed up to.

The proposal to replace the 'at risk' provisions for goods is actually fairly reasonable, but I think we've been there before and the EU didn't like it. I note that the legal action is also going to include the UK failing to put in place border inspection posts, so any prospects of negotiating on that particular item again isn't going to wash. The only efforts the UK had made in respect of the Protocol is going to great lengths to try and fudge things so the reality of it isn't apparent.

The rest of the Bill is utter drivel designed purely to piss off the EU. Not smart.

Are you as glad we left the CU as you were glad that the Tory Brexit happened?

I voted Remain.

The 2016 result was always going to be implemented, it was electorally inevitable. The people who couldn't see that - despite having it simply explained to them - are absolute fucking morons.

Yes, I know. I also recall you saying you were “glad” that Brexit had happened only later, once the Tories’ handling of it had kicked in (because that’s the totally normal socialist response). Was it their decision to leave the Customs Union that made you glad of it, or something else?

Only fair to pay to get into a club you voted to leave, isn't it? Oh wait, Scotland didn't.

Scottish travellers will have to pay a fee for entry to the European Union under a new scheme expected to come into force next year.

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will require a payment of £6 before travel to any EU states, to allow a security check created to “identify security, irregular migration or high epidemic risks posed by visa-exempt visitors” into Schengen member states.

Good to see the EU taking steps to keep foreign criminals out

Only it isn't Scottish travellers is it?  It is UK travellers of which Scotland is still a member.  2014 appears to be forgotten in all this.  We had a chance and the majority voted to stay as part of the UK.  We can hardly complain when the UK then does something on a majority basis.
