Michael W
If only the 'Brexit Opportunities Minister' could've done something about it in the two years he was in the job.
Billy Jean King
BoE finally admitting (they said taken aback lol) that food price inflation is way above anywhere else in Europe and it's now the main driver of UK inflation with the boffins now revising where they see inflation going and when. For the first time I noticed they actually mentioned Brexit as a contributor and highlighted how much faster prices were rising compared to EU countries. A UKG spokesman used the word "stubborn" when talking about inflation today. They certainly are the masters of understatement.
Michael W
Brexit doesn't really explain UK food inflation at the moment. Unless a UK business is importing live animals from the EU, the only additional costs are for a customs declaration. Transport and freight costs are higher due to inflation and high oil prices, but those same costs would've been incurred regardless. However...Brexit will cause a direct hit on food prices later in the year, as the UK will be implementing health controls on imports of animal products (meat, dairy etc.) from the EU in October. This has been put off repeatedly since 2021 for various reasons, but will finally be going ahead. Necessary to prevent the UK from being sued at the WTO for offering favourable facilitation to the EU and no-one else, but it'll cause an upwards hit in costs and, almost certainly, substantial disruption at UK ports. Dreadful timing which will certainly prolong UK food inflation by dragging it back upwards again.

Insignificant compared with energy costs and price rises in certain raw materials like fertiliser tbh. Given the UK's reliance on imported food and particularly from the EU, I would expect a substantial hit in October and probably some empty shelves. That's where Brexit will really bite regarding food. Edited May 11, 2023 by Michael W

Antlion
Don’t worry, Gordon Brown is being given a fresh jolt of electricity and a handful of eccies, and launching a pro-union rally in Edinburgh. I mean, that must mean the European Union, right? It can hardly be for the stauchly Brexity, anti-union UK…? https://uk.news.yahoo.com/amphtml/gordon-browns-think-tank-hold-145102940.html
