See if you read the comments on this on twitter, you'd think ww2 ended a few weeks ago and we are all fresh from seeing those uniforms across a battlefield. In reality, ww2 is more distant to us now, than the zulu wars, Ashanti wars and invasion of Malaysia would have been to the folk serving in ww2. Just putting the psychology of the UK into context as the whole 'Germens are bad' thing is something those in charge use to stir something in the British public. We should never forget the horrors of course and the volume of photos, film and still living testimonies bridges the time span more than previous generations, but it would be a lie to say that the images like above and the midsets didn't contribute in part to people's voting in the brexit referendum.

I only scrolled down the first couple of dozen and they are complimentary. These comments capture the tone well: "Respect that Johnson will never deserve" "The best thing about this is that she looks slightly embarrassed by all the fuss, as if what she’d rather have done is just leave on her last day. None of the narcissistic aggrandisement we see from some other leaders." "Incredibly powerful symbol of military personnel removing their armour to their Chancellor. That is respect." "Would she consider taking on a PM job in a certain island nation ?" "I certainly don’t agree with her every policy, but her outstanding competence sets her apart from most democratic leaders past and present" "It's amazing how she never moved from her apartment when she became chancellor, never had anyone to cook or clean for her, she and her husband still did it all themselves. She never employed family members or walked around with $75k handbags, Germany should be proud of Merkel." "Wish we had a leader of her integrity and calibre. She will be missed." "Great leader. Will be missed all over Europe." So if you read the comments on this twitter you'd see many tributes from Brits who have huge respect for Merkel.

The English right obsession with WW2 is pathetic at times Similar to the attitude they have towards France

I remember passing a house last year which was festooned with Union Jacks and pictures (I shit you not) of the queen on the anniversary of VE Day. No prizes for guessing what the attitude of the denizens within to Scottish independence or to Brexit would be (union good because we are British! Union bad because we are British!). Happily, this seems to be a weird, aggressively militaristic attitude (despite most of them having no first-hand experience of war) confined to a passing generation, perhaps especially here.
