EU rejects UK’s demand to rip up Brexit deal for Northern Ireland after less than three hours

Brussels insists Protocol is consequence of ‘type of Brexit’ UK chose – vowing it ‘must be implemented’

Oh well, we'll just have to stick with the "brilliant deal" we already have, then.

That might be the EU’s stated position  but they are going to have to take some sort of action against the U.K. before they are taken seriously.  Personally I think it’s going to have to be Draconian action otherwise Johnson and Co. will just carry on as before.

As an aside the guy Frost looks a really smarmy b*****d, the type that will sit with a smug smile on his face whilst his opposing officials threaten action only to go ballistic when they follow through.

It would really easy to sort out, just keep UK's rules aligned with the EU's for a period of time. They already are and I haven't seen any plans to change them. If there are in the future, then discuss how to work it out then. It's pure politics to keep the rabid fundamentalist wing of the party happy.

You say that as if the rabid fundamentalists aren't running the country. Johnston surrounded himself with the most mental aray of people from the Conservative benches and if he couldn't find the right people he parachuted them in via the lord's.

Im flying to Malta from Leeds today, just about to board the plane at the gate and an elderly couple were denied boarding because their passports didnt have 6months validity or something. 6 month validity has been a thing in the EU for years and years. The entire 21st century,  possibly longer.

We hold all the cards the fools

I suspect the game is Gin Rummy where the player who gets rid of their cards usually wins, and the player still holding all their cards loses.

Now it makes more sense.

The British negotiated this, they signed up to this and the current government campaigned on it

That's all that should be mentioned when the British side talks about "negotiation"

They can also invoke article 16 if they wish which allows unilateral measures to be taken.  So it isn't really as you suggest.

Indeed they can, but after the initial frisson of bravado has subsided the UK would almost certainly pay heavily for that course of action, both in and outwith the EU.

Any potential trade deal with the US would be put on the back burner for a while anyway, Uncle Joe and enough Congressmen on both sides of the aisle would make sure of it.

I'm not really seeing why this is all one way tbh.  Everyone knows that there are no winners when it comes to trade wars so it is in everyone's interest to reach agreement.

Sure, but it's a bit unfortunate when you try to back out of one 6 months after you signed it, and the other side has far less to lose than you.

The EU won't agree to anything that threatens the integrity of the single market or the GFA. The biggest loser is always going to be the UK.

Well I’m glad to hear they put so much thought into voting to leave the EU and didn’t make the decision on a daft whim.

Sarcasm.
