Tories want us to fucking starve.
The Tories must be privately getting very concerned about the optics of all of this. It wouldn't take much perceived hardship for a population mostly, and I stress mostly, unused to it to take a very dim view of such matters. Brexit was prosecuted on the basis of bombast and ignorance and now reality is biting. Bring it on.

Some Tories probably are. Some are so out of touch they think that jokey references to the fish being British are what the plebs want. Very marie antoinette. And we know how that ended.

The Tories have a majority of over 80 and we are almost four years away from another GE.  That’s why they don’t give a fùck.

We live in an elected dictatorship.

Quick Question. Scotland becomes independent in the EU.  How will this help food imports and exports to the EU that go through Dover? Surely they'll have to go through customs at Gretna and Dover.

Not sure about the final deal but this is an early picture of what we might expect form the Irish example, sealed containers getting fast tracked and the like.

That’s a big part of it. Another big part of it is that they just genuinely don't care about other people.

You forgot the supine opposition Granny. But it's not as simple as that. There's a growing anger amongst natural Tory supporters - farmers, fishermen, road haulers - and when the effects of EU departure become visible in services, banking, freedom of movement and rising unemployment there could be considerable political pressure. comfortable majority or not.

I’ll give you the supine opposition, though given our setup opposition is a very difficult gig.

It doesn’t matter how vocal the opposition is from within the Tory faithful there is literally nothing they can do.  Maybe a couple of years before the next GE some will start to take notice (and Johnson will be bounced) but there is no empirical evidence to suggest that a ruling party with a healthy majority can be pressurised with four years left to govern.

They might topple Boris but I dread to think who would replace him. No way will they force an election.

A Yes vote in 2014 would have been a one way ticket to similar disruption in a Scottish context. Maybe it would have been better if everybody across the British Isles would have given identity politics a rest and we could all have focussed on being European?

Nonsense.  62 countries have left the auspices of the UK and countless more around the world. There is a very clear path with a multitude of examples. Complete opposite to leaving the EU which nobody had ever done before.

See when people say stuff like lets leave identity politics you really mean lets all stay British eh, cause its your identity that's more important, but you have to pretend its not about that or the intellectual bankruptcy of your argument is laid bare.

As it happens we'd all remain British anyway but politically is what I'm talking about.
