Crazy idea, reduce vat to 15% and encourage people to spend sensibly, thus stimulating the economy?

Gordon Brown dropped the 20% rate back down to 17.5% a few years ago to 'stimulate the economy'. The prices in the shops generally didn't go down.

When the rate went up to 20% again, the prices went up.

All that happened was that the Treasury got less VAT revenues for the period when the rate was dropped!

Airbus not happy today, some clown just said "if they leave we should take over the plant and build our own wings"emoji23.png

This is why big corporations scatter production around the world. As well as allowing them to avoid tax and milk subsidies from multiple governments it also reduces the power of workers.

I really don’t believe in this idea. I am very happy to be public about it and very happy if the prime minister decides I am not the right person to do the business industry job.

[A no-deal Brexit] would be a total disaster for the economy, I was delighted to read Airbus’s comments this morning because it is telling it like it is.

UK business minister Richard Harrington  tells German industrialists that he was delighted to hear Airbus threaten to sack British workers!

That and the fact that Airbus was originally a government backed collaboration between the UK, the Germans and France. Our perspicacious Government pulled out in 1969 fearing they would not recoup their money:lol:, but the other two were reluctant to carry the cost of bringing the wing development over there, so we managed to keep it with the then Hawker Siddely  owning 20% of the Airbus shares. Later, Hawker's successor BAE systems decided to sell it's share in Airbus eliminating any UK based management from Airbus in order to concentrate on the sprawling US defence contract business.  Ironically they then tried to merge with Airbus' parent company EADS (who subsequently took the Airbus name as their own when restructuring their business) in order to get that civilian market stability back.

Just another UK clusterfuck with Europe really, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

TBF the Tories helped the SNP out by cutting their VAT on Police Scotland.

The Scottish government of the day knew fine well they would be liable for VAT.

Uh-huh they also knew there was no good reason for it and campaigned constantly to get it lifted, which the Tories eventually did.

That's an interesting interpretation.
