Singapore, Advice !

Recommended Posts

Heading out to Singapore for 10 days at the end of next week, I am there over the weekend of the F1 night race, so that's a couple of days taken care of (Sat & Sun) but looking for suggestions for the remaining days.

What I could be doing with is advice from people who have recently been with the Must See's, Don't waste your time and money & Worth a visit.

Any other advice accepted.............Over to you lot ?

10 days just for Singapore is a bit excessive, even considering the fact that 2 are ticked off for the GP

Sentosa, Clarke Quay, Orchard St  (shopping), the zoo (night-time safari)

Would look at heading up to Malaysia, either by car over the bridge to Johor, or a flight up to Kuala Lumpur

Or either the ferry to Bintan, belongs to Indonesia, but is v  Singaporean

Singapore slings in the Long bar at raffles. V touristy, but hey you're a tourist.

its about 6 years since I was last there so things may have changed, but the hawkers markets for food are something a bit different, smith street I think it's on. Little India is also really worth checking out. As is Chinatown.

Everything that German Jag says. 10 days is far too long for Singapore. As also mentioned above Chinatown and Little India, Gardens by the bay, eating in the Hawker centres (they are hundreds of them not just one). Jump over to Malaysia and there is Legoland.

For the length of time you have I would probably split your time between Singapore and maybe KL or Penang.

You can fly to either easily and cheaply or you can get the train (4-6 hours to KL), a bit long but interesting and costs next to nothing.

Will be back working in Singapore probably from next weekend, so hopefully catch the F1 myself.

Don't bother with Malaysia, there's not much there. Singapore is great but 10 days is a bit much. Why not jump on a plane to Bali for a few days inbetween?

A sweeping statement with not much in Malaysia? Petronas towers, KLCC, bird Park, KL tower, national mosque, Botanical gardens, many Temples, Batu Caves, Central Market, the parks around KL, Penang and the beaches and old town off the top of my head. Enough to fill 10 days in Malaysia and not far From Singapore.

Would agree with Bali if you want to take a 2 - 3 hour flight. A handful of days can be enough for Bali and he could fill his days easily there.

I think one common theme though, 10 days is far too much for Singapore.

I was there for 2 days in summer and that was enough for me personally. It was extremely hot and humid, I was just soaking wet the entire time with sweat :1eye. Go and catch a lights show - http://www.marinabaysands.com/entertainment/wonderfull.html, times etc are in that link.

As others have said already, Gardens by the Bay, go to Little India, Chinatown, visit a temple. It is pricey.

If you decide to take anyone's advice and head to Bali then let us know, I can throw some advice your way.

I live in Jakarta so we are in Singapore quite a lot.

Agree with what everybody else is saying, couldn't imagine being there for a week let alone 10 days. If you have kids then we are playing a visit to Legoland (just over the border in Malaysia) - supposedly really easy to get a car/bus from Changi airport.

We really like Little India and Chinatown in Singapore - the only places where the drink is relatively inexpensive (compared to the rest of the place).

Jump on an AirAsia plane and head to Bali for a week instead - really cheap flights available. Bali not mega cheap anymore but loads of decent accommodation and plenty of stuff to see. Could do the beach or head inland to Ubud if you fancy some more culture.

Thanks for all the very good info guys.

Although its a 10 day trip, that includes a Dubai stopover, so we are actually only in Singapore for the week.

The weekend is taken care of (Fri, Sat & Sun), due to all the street carnivals & concerts on around the F1 event, like Kylie, Queen and Adam Lambert, K C & Sunshine Band, Bastille and loads more are on at the Padang each night after the races, maybe not every bodies taste but it's included in our F1 package.

We have however booked a round of night golf at the Marina Sands Golf Club under the Floodlights, something different, including the unique PAR 6 hole at 730 yds long and the "Island" hole (tee, lake, green in the middle).

Travelling out of Singapore is not something we are considering once we get there, quite happy to stay in and around the city and explore.

We stayed for 3 nights in January, we were in the Marina Bay Sands so spent time in infinity pool, but I don't think it is open to the public.

Assuming there are no kids involved I would recommend trying Nox dining in the dark which is a surreal experience but well worth it we thought. Then afterwards go for drinks in Hadji lane, the place we went to called Bar Stories doesn't have a menu, but you tell them what you like and they make a cocktail based on it which again was pretty cool.

Long bar for a singapore sling is worth a visit and also Gardens by the bay there is a bar there also whose name escapes me and also the singapore flyer.

The shopping centre at the Marina Bay sands is also worth a look just mainly to see how the other half live (conveniently forget your wallet when you go there else the Mrs may have you bankrupt before you can blink an eye)

I'm heading over for the race and will be they're for ten days. I'm staying with family so will spend a lot of time playing with lego and going to soft play with the kids.

As others have said cocktails at the long bar at raffles is a tourist must.

Both the zoo and the river safari are good thing to do. I'll be doing the night safari this stay.

Sounds day bit the food in singapore is amazing it's worth getting yourself to a Hawker centre preferably away from Downton.

Head over to sentosa for breakfast (coasts is great) you'll sit on the beach looking out at shipping containers but it's a good thing to do. The aquarium is quite good over there too.

One thing that singapore does well is cinema. You can go gold class which involves a lazy boy with table service although it totally ruins you when you go to the cinema here. There's one in vivo city which is just across the water from sentosa.

As others have said China town, little India and the the Arab quarter are worth spending some time in.

If you want to escape the city would recommend heading to Hollywood (?) banana farm. It is near the north of the island and is worth the trip as you'll see a completely different singapore.

Take a litre of your favourite spirit in with you as depending on where you are staying booze can be eye wateringly expensive.

Have fun!

Take loads of cash, singers is expensive. The metro is cheap and very good for getting around.Horse racing on a friday night is a good night out if your not doing friday free practice at the gp

You can take a ferry across to batam island(45 mins) and have a day trip there if you fancy a change.Batam is in indonesia but you can get a visa on arrival and get a day trip tour from the various companies at harbourfront in singapore(basically the last metro stop before sentosa island)

As others have stated the long bar at raffles to have a sling is a must (its about a 5 min walk from the circuit entrance)

Forgot to add if your going to marina sands casino for a look around remember to take your passport for id to gain entrance

No need for a visa to Indonesia if your entering as a tourist for under 30 days. In saying that I really wouldn't bother with Batam, it's pretty crap.

Havent been in Indonesia for a 2 years, when did that change??Not complaining though the amount collected at bali airport must be a significant drop though

I like Batam(worked there for a year) its alright for a change of scenery from the city state

When I last went to batam, I'm sure the visa cost 20 US dollars! Batam town/city and Nagoya were a bit of a culture shock when we first got there from Singapore (dad was based there for a few months) probably around 2005. Are there still the great hulks of ships being broken up there? Something interesting to see on the ferry in.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'd be interested to hear from those who were over last month as to how it went and what you ended up doing/missing?

We will be there for a few nights in February (one night at my dads in Malaysia, 2 nights at Sands), but don't want to leave him tour-guiding us so would be good to have an idea of what's good/interesting/fun that we can suggest?
