Favourite quirks of Scottish stadiums.

On 2nd look they are about the same height as the JHS.

Would have resulted in a ridiculous capacity. I’d reckon an extra 2000 in north stand and maybe 4000 in the opposite end?

I remember going to watch Thistle, as a student, just after they opened the new stand and thinking how weird it was that they'd gone for something as big as the Wheatfield Stand back home.

Im sure we played them just after the plans came out and in the programme there was a letter saying the capacity could be too small.

Coming out with mental opinions took a lot more work in those days.

Chairmen in the 90s all seemed to believe that clubs were on the verge of a massive boom and huge rise in attendances due to stadia becoming all seater and increasingly TV coverage.

At our club there were seemingly plans to have the North stand (the one opposite the main stand) be the same height as the stands behind the goals.

If you go back there are quite a lot of interviews from chairmen then talking a massive load of shite about how fans will love all seater grounds because they're seemingly more comfortable and have better 'facilities'. Total bollocks and totally out of touch.

With the space behind the North stand that would have made sense if you needed to expand East End Park. It would have been much better than the two large stands at either end.

That North terrace when split between home and away fans was superb.

is there any reason that its not been extended for home fans the full length of the stand (It was a similar arrangement at Motherwell before redevelopment) or why away fans cannot use the old away part of the North stand?

But we would never have needed to expand. That would have taken the capacity to something like 16k. We've never come close to averaging that at any point in our history. The current stadium is far too big for us, and has been for the most part since it was built.

The whole of the North has been used by home fans on a couple of occasions. They did put the away fans in the North East for a few games many years ago (i.e. just that section and nowhere else) but stopped it fairly quick. I think it's because it lacks disabled facilities.

Oddly quite a few Falkirk fans want to build a 4th stand at their ground*. That would be an exceptionally stupid move and I have no idea why so many of them seem in favour of it.

*By which I mean they want a 4th stand to be built, not that they wish to physically build it themselves.

If they were to get back in the top flight, they'd sell it out for the Old Firm and possibly the Edinburgh clubs. It would complete what is otherwise a very impressive stadium. Right now it looks a bit Mickey Mouse.

A Muirton Park style covered terrace would look fantastic there imo....

Not really when allowing for the staged development of the stadium. Having the larger main stand allowed them to open the stadium with just 2 stands.

Well now there's safe standing in the SPL, that would maybe be a possibility. Is it possible to have a terrace without any seats, though? Otherwise it'd be more expensive than an ordinary seated stand, presumably.

Football supporters have an idealised picture of what a football ground looks like and will fly in the face of sense to get it.

When Airdrie were building their ground there were chances to stop work and save money, they weren't taken because Directors at the time had that ideal picture in their own minds and had a fear of supporters reaction to having partially complete end stands.

The empty land behind the Falkirk Stadium, opposite the main stand.  It's a really nice stadium, inside and out, but loses a lot of atmosphere because of the absence of a stand on that side.

A pal mentioned the fact why we had to build the stadium so far towards Grangemouth with the massive car park to the front of the main stand. Ok, it looks impressive from the front, but was it built that far back to hit the exclusion zone?

The main stand is pretty big as well. Even when Airdrie have a decent support in it there is still and emptyness. Maybe if it was same size as the stand opposite it would be better.

Looking at the stadium at falkirk could they not finish it with a small covered enclosure more akin to the old Brockville covered enclosure than the Muirton Park one above.

Something like the covered terrace at Forfar would not cost too much to build.

It would have to be free or clubs would need paid to build it. There is no money to do anything other than essential maintenance. It would be more logical to dismantle and sell stands, but finding anyone to buy them would be the hard bit.

Speaking of Motherwell, am I right in remembering that when the stand behind the goal was first built, they tried to recoup some of the money up front by offering away fans the chance to buy tickets for their clubs' games at Fir Park for the next three seasons at a reduced rate? I think they were almost universally told to GTF as nothing had been said about a refund if the teams were in different divisions in the time covered.

That would be utterly pointless though. They don't need a 4th stand. The cost of it and the cost of maintaining it would surely far outweigh any potential benefits.
