Fair play to the guy.  He seems like the type to be very honest with himself, and probably knew that as captain he was probably going to be a first pick.  If he doesn't feel he is still up to the standard expected of him in a Scotland shirt, then it's better doing this then going, say, the Kenny Miller route, where you admirably keep turning up, but end up being the bane of some fans' existence.

It certainly makes some decisions a little easier now for Strachan, or perhaps harder depending on how you look at it.  Do we have the sort of player that we were hoping Brown could be for us?  I'd really like us to have one strong, uncompromising player to sit in front of the defenders, who can give it to the more ball-playing guy next to him.  Brown hasn't been that for a while, but is there anyone really that can fill that spot now?  Could be moving more towards a 4-4-1-1 system now.

No, I meant Gordon Greer, he is 35 and past it, we should be looking to the future, not continuing to call neverhasbeens like him. His record means nothing, there were 10 other players playing the same time as him remember..........

There no question that Brown struggled for form over the last 18 months or so for Scotland (as well as Celtic). So it's disappointing that he has made this decision just as he is beginning to find his form again. On the other hand, his decision has perhaps been driven by his struggles to keep his form since his injury troubles increased. It might be for the best.

Agree with craigkillie that we should give Hanley the captaincy. Was he not the Blackburn captain as well before he went to Newcastle?

He was. Was just going to ask if he's Newcastle captain now (I don't expect he is but hadn't checked)?

The reason he's been so poor recently for Scotland IMO....

1. He's not been fully fit.

2. He's been asked to play as 1 of the 2 holding CM's, he's clearly a better player when  he's bang in the middle of the park bursting forward from time to time.

I think his presence in the team will be missed more than anything, he's been a good servant for us, fair play to him BUT with the system wee Gordon plays he's not suiting to it, we would have been better with Fletcher and McArthur starting in those 2 holding roles anyway.

Good riddance. Cannot remember Scott Brown doing much of value in a Scotland shirt at all.

Pretty average player in a time of total dross from the National Team. Hopefully the first of a number of retirements/droppings of a set of players who have absolutely and prodigiously failed the nation.

Got absolutely no time for those who retire from international football either. It is the biggest honour that can be bestowed on a player. To not make themselves available is poor.
