I cringe when fans refer to players by nicknames, as if they're big pals.

Refer to them by their given surnames!

Surely a nickname is just a quicker way of referring to someone, rather than trying to seem as if they've got pals in the squad?  Cringing at a shite nickname - fair enough, but I'm not sure I find nicknames in general cringey.

Very often, the name used is no shorter; it's just a means of conveying being pally.

Nicknames should only be applied to people you actually know.  That should in fact be a rule.

The definition of nickname disagrees with you, and so will I.

We agree that you can't make up a decent nickname, aye.

It was somebody's nickname at some point, hence why I used it as my username.

Players are also terrible at nicknames.

When we had Ian McShane, it surely screamed out that he be referred to as Lovejoy.

What did he get called?  Macca.

We're surely discussing fan nicknames for players here, given that your argument has been based on folk "not knowing" the players so therefore can't give them a nickname.

Two separate things here:

Players are allowed to use nicknames, but shouldn't because they're rubbish at them.

Fans should not use nicknames, especially those intended to convey chuminess.
