Most of our players were too busy to play football as they were away fighting a war.

Aye, how selfish of them, go away galavanting to fight in world war 2 instead of completing their fixtures. Tsk!  Tsk!

To be clear I wasn't endorsing the apparent motivation, although I suppose the other clubs might have said the same thing.

It's interesting what happened during and after the war. At the outbreak the existing SFL First & Second divisions of 20 & 18 were suspended. After a few weeks of friendlies and local cup-ties, they were replaced with SFL Eastern & Western divisions of 16 clubs each who would also play in a SFA War Emergency Cup replacing the Scottish Cup. Brechin, Forfar, Montrose, East Stirlingshire and Edinburgh City asked to or were required to withdraw and Leith and St Bernards had to toss over it (St Bernards won); halfway through the resulting division Cowdenbeath resigned after playing everyone once.

At the end of the season the 'Phoney War' ended and the SFA shut down for the duration although a Southern League and later a North-Eastern League operated. By 1946-47 Kings Park and St Bernards had folded but Stirling Albion joined... In terms of how the leagues were restarted - as A & B divisions of 16 & 14, with the rest in a new C division - compared to 1939-40:

A Division
Aberdeen, Celtic, Clyde, Falkirk, Hibs, Rangers, Hearts, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Partick, Queen of the South, St Mirren, Third Lanark
+ Morton, Queen's Park ... were in Second Division 1939-40 but were promoted to A Division 1946-47. Both had played in the Southern League for the duration - while Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Queen of the South had not.

B Division
Airdrieonians, Dumbarton, Dundee, Dundee Utd, Dunfermline, East Fife, Raith, Stenhousemuir
+ Albion Rovers, Alloa, Arbroath, Ayr, Cowdenbeath, St Johnstone ... were in First Division 1939-40 but were demoted to B Division 1946-47. This was especially harsh on Albion Rovers as they had played in the Southern League for the duration - as had Airdrieonians and Dumbarton.

C Division
+ Brechin, East Stirlingshire, Edinburgh City, Forfar, Leith, Montrose ... were in Second Division 1939-40 but were demoted to C Division 1946-47. All had been withdrawn in October 1939.
+ Stirling ... were a new member

Update at the half way point in the season.  I'll update again when we reach the 3/4 stage.

Forfar Athletic - 5178 / 9 = 575.33

Stirling Albion - 5175 / 9 = 575

Clyde - 5030 / 9 = 558.88

Montrose - 4136 / 9 - 459.55

Berwick Rangers 3685 / 9 = 409.44

Edinburgh City - 3484 / 9 = 387.11

Forfar are top and we are all but getting the same crowds as them while we're sat joint bottom.

Embarrassing.

Forfar has a population of just over 14,000, while Stirling's is just under 46,000 so for them to get the same crowds its embarrassing for Stirling if anyone.
