Do you get more points based on the quality of the opposition or the strength of the league they play in? So, for instance, would Aberdeen get loads of points if they beat Burnley or would it be just the same as if they had beaten some mob from Estonia or wherever?

As far as I am aware, no. That would make it far to easy for the diddies to catch up with the big boys, all it would take is one team to fluke a good run and they could storm up the rankings.

No, but if they beat Burnley they would then be playing an unseeded team in the next round.

When was the last club in Scotland to win 4 games in Europe apart from Celtic?

Rangers in 2007-08 on their way to the UEFA Cup Final.

Motherwell won 3 games in 2010-11. Aberdeen won 3 games in 2014-15 + 2016-17.

Other than those, only non-OF examples winning 3 games since the 1980s :o are Hearts in 2001-02 and Hibs in 2006-07.

Last non-OF to win 4 was Hearts in 1988-89.

Seeing Dunfermline there reminds me how silly it was to allow the Scottish Cup runners-up into Europe - Queen of the South, Falkirk, Gretna and Dunfermline amassed a win and two draws between them, no help to the coefficient in the mid-late 00s.

That was a UEFA ruling. After they scrapped the Cup-Winners' Cup they continued to allow cup runners-up to qualify when the cup was won by CL qualifier until abolished a few seasons ago.

If we made it 'difficult' for ourselves it was by having an open draw plus replays in a cup taken seriously by all clubs - unlike many on the continent - which made lower-league sides more likely to reach finals.

You omit to mention Aberdeen (finished bottom - lost on away goals to Bohemians Dublin)... Dundee Utd (9th - lost to MyPa)... and Hibs (7th - lost to Malmo)... Dundee (6th) did beat Vlaznia, then lost to Perugia. So it wasn't just tough when a First Division club or weak SPL club qualified as runners-up.

Until the late 1990s we gave a UEFA Cup place to the League Cup winner although it was rarely used, and e.g. Raith did very well. Although it didn't generate coefficient points we also rarely entered the Intertoto, and often not with the highest eligible clubs.

Fecking hell i knew it was bad but that is pretty depressing, some fans mite say summer football is the answer i'm not so sure.
For me there is a lack of preparation for these games, play 38 games get all excited for a European spot then BANG out on your arse.

Only 13/55 UEFA countries have a summer season, so we're starting at the same time as most of our opponents.

For the next UEL round, Aberdeen start a week earlier than Burnley and Hibs three weeks earlier than Asteras Tripolis, though Rangers start a week later than their Croatian opponents Osijek.

For me there is a lack of professionalism here, over a time you would expect sporadic successes,if clubs from Lithuania,Albania  and Macedonia can manage 4 wins surely clubs in Scotland can do the same?

I am not so sure. Scottish clubs lose their players, over the summer.

It's past the laws of averages fucksake,a club in this country should be stepping into the light from the darkest brother, the priority of these games should be paramount not used as an extension to the summer holidays, friendlies to get the players fitness up.

Under the new system starting this year more club coefficient points are being awarded in the Qualifying stage. So, if Aberdeen go out in QR 2 this season they'll get more points than they did being eliminated in QR3 in previous years. Meaning they have a good chance of being seeded in QR2 if they qualify again next season.  From UEFA.com

For matches up to and including 2017/18

UEFA Champions League points system
First qualifying round elimination – 0.5 points
Second qualifying round elimination – 1 point
Group stage bonus participation – 4 points
Group stage win – 2 points
Group stage draw – 1 point
Round of 16 bonus participation – 4 points

Clubs are also awarded an additional point if they reach the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.

NB Points are not awarded for elimination in the third qualifying round or play-offs, since those clubs move to the UEFA Europa League and are awarded points for participation in that competition.

UEFA Europa League points system
First qualifying round elimination – 0.25 points
Second qualifying round elimination – 0.5 points
Third qualifying round elimination – 1 point
Play-off elimination – 1.5 points
Group stage win – 2 points
Group stage draw – 1 point

Clubs are also guaranteed a minimum of two points if they reach the group stage and are awarded an additional point if they get to the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.

*Penalty shoot-outs do not affect the calculation system.

For 2018/19 matches onwards

UEFA Champions League points system

Potentially but that also means other teams will be getting better coefficients so 5.500 might not be enough to be seeded. Miss one year and you are basically back where you are now.

First of the Coefficient points dropped tonight. Well done Sevco. We should have been looking for 1.5 points in these first rounds. Max now is 1.375.

A definite blow to Arbroath's hopes of European football?

Oh no. You’ve made Scott Brown even angrier and it’s now even less Celtics fault they’re shite in Europe.
