If we want 15th spot, we need two very good seasons (or one exceptional season that would involve at least two in the knockout stages).

Realistically, three decent seasons and we may make it. Celtic making the CL group stage and the other three making it to at least QR3 could bring in 27/28 points, which would be considered a decent season, and is the sort of average you need to produce each year to get to 15th, which means five teams qualifying, two of which are in the CL qualifiers.

Any of the EL three making the group stages would be a very good season.

We're not talking impossible targets really. Just not getting knocked out by the Alashkert's or Stjarnan's of the world would give us a fighting chance.

It also depends of course on how other countries are performing. The ones ranked (in next season's table) from 13th to 17th are the ones to keep an eye on. Sweden in 18th aren't far behind but are about to drop down the table the following season unless they have a decent season this year.

So keep an eye on Greece, Holland, Romania, Croatia and Austria.

Helpfully, Romanian side CSMS Lasi have been drawn against Croatians Hajduk Split in the EL QR2, so one of them is about to lose a team early.

The Dutch have been struggling for a few years, but have the advantage of having PSV already in the CL group stage.

The Romanians have been doing well and occupy 15th, but had a poor season last year, actually picking up less points than Scotland.

And we're up and running with two wins. We're flying up the table.

Haha

if only.

So far Scotland got 0.5pts from those wins, The maximum possible.

Azerbaijan sitting 24th and climbing shouldn't be a massive surprise. While they have next to no footballing heritage, they have a shit load of petrodollars, and, more importantly, they have everyone's favourite mental ginger footballing genius Robert Prosinecki in charge of their national side.

Only Austria and Croatia had teams playing in this round from that group above.

Austria: Admira Wacker 1-1 Spartak Myjava

Could be a tricky second leg for them in Slovakia. Good chance they might go out.

Croatia: UE Santa Coloma 1-3 Lokomotiva

They should probably be alright.

I was more referring to the fact that Scotland is in a scrap with Azerbaijan in the UEFA rankings - it shows how far we've really fallen.

FC Midtjylland and Brondby both won last night so Denmark should have 0.5 instead of 0.25 surely?

Yeah they should, the table I saw and copied from hadn't updated with the Brondby game as it hadn't finished. It kicked off at 2230 for some reason.

Kicked off at 9pm local time. An hour later than games usually start here, but then I think the game would have been played in daylight because it doesn't even get dark there at the moment until near midnight.

Good post. As was pointed out earlier, the expectation is on my club, Celtic getting into the CL group stage. I'm also hoping at least one other club can make the EL group stage. Realistically expecting Hearts or Aberdeen to be favourites to achieve this. Pressure is off Hibs given the draw they got but NL pulled off some good results with Celtic in the CL & I'm hopeful they can do something too.

Group stage for any of the Europa League teams is still a massive ask. We'll draw a Sociedad level team and that'll be that.

Our clubs have done well against some decent calibre of clubs though. Aberdeen v Gronigen, St Johnstone v Rosenborg. It can be done.

Look at Leicester & Iceland. Got to start having a real go at these teams and achieving something for Scottish football.

Aberdeen have had a go at these teams (Sociedad at Pittodrie) but we're underdogs for a reason. 90% of the time the better team wins. Groningen and Rosenborg, while good teams, aren't on the level of most of the clubs that come into play in QR3 and 4, and certainly not the playoff round.

Interestingly the two largest crowds for all the first legs of QR1 came in Scotland - by quite some distance ahead of Aktobe of Kazakhstan, who's 8,500 was the third largest.

Not sure what to conclude from that other than we're punching below our weight by even being in this round.

It's interesting seeing the level of support from other clubs to QR1 matches.

AIK Stockholm for example have an average crowd of about 14,000, yet only had just over 6,000 at their game.

IFK Gothenburg have an average of 13,000, yet also only got 6,000.

Where as Aberdeen and Hearts had 12,500 and 14,500. Aberdeen's maybe slightly more interesting as it was at full price - Hearts may have seen a drop had theirs not been priced at £12.

Brondby have an average of around 15,000, so it'll be interesting to see what they get this week.
