Yeah that doesn't really work here.

Well sure. To make it a proper analogy, the original shoplifter would have to have died in the interim, and it's the guy who bought his house afterwards who's demanding the rebate.

To be fair the guy that bought his house has told everyone that his name is the same as the guy who died, and he's spent the last four years acting the c**t just like the first guy.

Also posted this on the BRALT - but under Craig Whyte they were still collecting PAYE deductions due but never made them to HMRC, I'm sure?

Correct. That was around £20m worth of non payment. There was the Big Tax Case, which is the one being discussed now, which even at the "new" rate would have been another £20m odds, and the Wee Tax Case, which was an additional £4m. On top of all the other debt they held.

The argument being posed by Rangers fans right now is that had the BTC been decided at the current figure, it would have been manageable, which would have meant no Craig Whyte and no PAYE/VAT default, and no liquidation. The issue with that argument however that the main reason HMRC have revised the figure is because the club is being liquidated. It's not worth their while spending more money to argue their point, as they won't see enough back to justify spending more chasing it.

Sevco supporters are literally incapable of having any sort of self-worth without comparing their team's fortunes to other teams' fortunes.

Try getting a job or starting a family. Something else to provide meaning to your life.

None of them actually care about the club. It's a means to compensate for their own lack of self-esteem. The minute it looks as if it can't service that need, they aren't interested.

What are you trying to compensate for with this relentless cod Jungian analytical psychobabble?

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being. Ho ho ho.....

Why do these people kid on that they're outraged by this?

They're absolutely desperate  for there to have been some sort of government conspiracy to bring down Rangers. The idea that they were just a terribly run business that overspent to achieve unattainable goals just doesn't sound as grand does it?

Not reliable at all. Disingenuous at best.

It's not true. It was reported in some quarters at the time that this would likely happen in the end.

I doubt it very much.

Wasn't a screw up. HMRC decided earlier this year that it wasn't worth the hassle of arguing over some of the points of the Rangers payment system at the time. Essentially they have agreed at this point that the EBT payments will be counted as gross wage and not the net wage. They won't receive full payment no matter what they do, and have decided it's not worth pursuing further. There is a similar train of thought with the penalties that were being applied. Now, in essence, Rangers have only not paid around £24m in tax that was owed between the big and wee tax cases.

Disingenuous rather than speculative. Had Rangers continued as they were and not been put into admin then liquidation, HMRC would have more than likely challenged the points mentioned above, and challenged the basis of the payment as well as chased the penalties in full.

All that said, I agree with Kincardine. From a non Rangers perspective, it is so much funnier to think of this as some giant conspiracy to down the establishment club.

In all seriousness if they did merge you'd legitimately be able to claim to still be the same club, so that would end all this sevco unpleasantness.

Didn't the GASL suggest something like that a couple of years ago? #hekensfinewell

The Sevco stuff  has never really bothered me tbf, I probably use it more than most. Right now I'm guessing that most people have no idea about what's going to happen,  king did mention that it was possible but wouldn't be straightforward and would take a while.

BDO appear to have the bit between their teeth, a lot more professional than the duffers were.

I know these staunch types live in the past but John Reid hasn't been home secretary since 2007 or held any goverment role since. Come to think of it they probably could get tin foil about a long con plot involving John Reid & that other pesky catholic Tony Blair to destroy the good honest Protesant club.

On your first point, he has been spot on with almost everything relating to the whole issue, since the start. I wouldn't start betting against him now.

On your second point, BDO are doing everything they can to maximise the pay out to creditors. That is their job, and they are making a hell of a lot of money in doing it. The chances of the old club being bought over still remain very much in the "Not going to happen" region.

People are going to speculate, its human nature.  The constant leaks from HMRC to celtic sites/blogs were suspicious and given the scope of the error involved it should be looked at.  Things will probably calm down in a day or two.

On one hand we have a blogger with an agenda, on the other hand we have a respected newspaper whose journalists have actually done their job professionally.

And that attitude is exactly why Rangers ended up in the situation they were in.

No, that happened due to possible incompetence at HMRC.

Did HMRC force Rangers to incorrectly use EBTs?

Did HMRC force Rangers to incorrectly use DOS's?

Did HMRC force Rangers to spend every penny they raised in transfer fees on new players instead of paying off debts that were accruing?

Did HMRC force the Scottish press to portray Craig Whyte as a billionaire?

Did HMRC force Craig Whyte to not pay VAT and PAYE while running the club?

Did HMRC force Rangers fans to stick their fingers in their ears and cover their eyes and ignore the mountains of evidence that was being thrown at them left right and centre of all of the above?

Ah yes, the print media. No agendas there. No sir. Well known for being completely transparent and upstanding.
