I worked abroad for a year and knocked about with a rangers fan(l say rangers not sevco because it's that long ago) he was hardcore rangers. We kept in touch through social media mostly when we went our separate ways, to say he campaigned tirelessly for independence is an understatement..

It's a puzzler, go to Ibrox draped in a Union Jack singing GSTQ and be a hardened SNP supporter hell bent on Independence...

I know a good few sevco fans ( I say sevco because I'm talking about now and rangers are died). Some of them are actually alright guys, but it's a small minority. (pity none of them post on this board), but mostly they are rabid right wing nut jobs. Tory Councilers, and bigots. Orange walkers.  Even in Glasgow the tories get a 10% vote. Sevco fans are a small minority.

From my experience, there are far more Celtic supporters in Glasgow than Rangers fans. Of course that's anecdotal and based on my experience of having lived and worked in Glasgow for more than fifteen years.

Rangers named as 'right-wing club' in controversial article by Brazilian sports site

Rangers feature alongside Partizan Belgrade, F.C. Hansa Rostock, PSG and Chelsea in the list of clubs that are 'linked to right-wing ideologies'
https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/sport/football/rangers-named-right-wing-club-18398948
One of Brazil's most popular news sites have made the controversial claim that Rangers are a 'right-wing club' in a new article.
UOL, which has a Facebook following of over 8 million people in the South American country, published the piece in the sports section of their website today.
Bearing the headline 'Politics on the pitch: 5 more right-wing soccer teams', the article includes the Ibrox club in a list of sides 'linked to right-wing ideologies'.
Rangers feature in the list alongside Partizan Belgrade, F.C. Hansa Rostock in Germany, PSG and Chelsea.
In reference to Rangers, the article notes: "While Celtic has more left-wing ideals and represents Scotland's Catholic community, Rangers are the nation's right wing and Protestant club.
"In general, supporters of the blue team vote for the Conservative Party, defend the United Kingdom as a unified country and are 100% loyal to the authority of Queen Elizabeth.
"With so many political and ideological differences, the "Old Firm", the classic match that sees the two main forces of Scottish football play each other, is usually one of the most explosive derbies in Europe."
The article is a follow-up to from an original article on '5 more right-wing soccer teams' published at the end of May, which featured Lazio, Legia Warsaw, Real Madrid, Beitar Jerusalem and Zenit Saint Petersburg - the team that defeated Rangers in 2008 to lift the UEFA Cup final.

^^^^ I have to say that most of this is absolute bollox but quite funny anyway.
Where's the controversy?

Is that not the truth?

It simply must be the case that lots of Rangers fans favour independence.  I think the much maligned Bennett on here does for instance.  I can only imagine plenty must find the imagery jarring, but I don't really get how it can all be reconciled.

Of course many Rangers fans support independence - we are, after all, a broad kirk.  Of course the estimable @bennett- whom you'll agree doesn't merit the opprobrium he gets on here - is an Indy supporter but he doesn't fit the mould so he gets pelters from the Yessers on here.

It isn't a movement I favour myself but a big barrier to independence is the Natters themselves who are, largely, a shower of small-minded,  identity-driven grievance junkies.

Is this Natters patter the best you can come up with?

Deary me.

It isn't really.  Not that many Rangers fans are Tories.  Most are old-fashioned Labour supporters - though that's pretty meaningless these days since Labour in Scotland has become a bit of a limp joke.

Most of us are Unionist - but then so is most of Scotland.

Natter/Nationalist - not sure why it would irk you.

As far as Rangers fans go - Natters are welcome.  It's a football club after all.  That you and yours lump us all together is to your chagrin but unsurprising.

Ibrox average attendance 40,000  Maybe a quarter are from Ireland that's 30,000 votes not a big deal in the big picture, escpecially when you have the same number of **** (or more) voting the other way. Football teams are not really the be all and end all of things. In a recent post it was pointed out that three times as many people go to church on a sunday as go to a football game on a full card Saturday.

Thanks for explaining the numbers to me as if I were approaching my 7th birthday - I'd really no idea until you painted your picture.

It might just be that the Rangers 'support' exceeds that which fits in the crowd each week, meaning that the identified phenomenon remains curious.

Aside from that, are you seriously suggesting that around 10,000 fans at typical Rangers home games have come over on the ferry?

@bennett is a total wind up merchant and deserves everything he gets on here, he loves the attention too.

Havnt seen him post in a while, you OK Vicky?

I’ve known a lot of fans from both sides at various stages in my life. When I was younger, as you said above the Rangers fans were very pro-right wing although barely knew what right wing meant. The Celtic fans were pro IRA and again were clueless and thought it was controversial to sing IRA fans. I occasionally see some of the above people, predominantly at funerals and such events. They haven’t really changed, they are just drunker.

As I’ve got older the fans I know from both sides appear to have changed, albeit it’s mainly through work and a lot are in senior positions so won’t obviously act like that at work.

My point kinda is, there are arseholes on both sides, and both indeed all fan bases, but as you get older you can make more of a conscious choice to avoid the arseholes.

Most of it is just cultural identity and doesn't necessarily factor into decision-making after they leave the match.

It's the same as people going to church on Sunday because they identify culturally as a Christian but then going into the office and happily committing fraud on Monday morning.

I think you're right, but I find it weird.

Of course the reasons for supporting football teams can be different from those for supporting political parties, movements or causes, but it strikes me as odd that some can reconcile it if their beliefs are totally at odds with the very explicit identity of their club.

Another feature concerns the 'socialist' Celtic fans on here who have views regarding wealth distribution in football, that would make Keith Joseph wince.

He's calmed down a bit after posting screeds of attention-seeking shite on the BLM thread then greeting about being bullied. Tbf it did inspire a tremendous heads-gone from one of the idiot jambos who went out to bat for him in some style, only to be left hanging in humiliating fashion, ironically on the heads gone thread.

Daily Record claiming the liquidation costs of "the former rangers owner" are escalating.  Yet in the article itself, they do actually name the entity that is being liquidated as being "rangers football club plc".  Subservient journalism in Scotland at its very best.

My money is on them not knowing how to vote.

The sad thing is I know Rangers fans that voted Conservative at the last election for the sole reason that they believe that’s how a Rangers fan is supposed to vote; preserve the union, get Brexit done etc. The problem is that they do vote.
