There is exactly as much chance of Kent's fee being £7m as there was that King forced Ashley into a "greatly improved retail deal" in the summer of 2017. Both are instances of lazy/absent research and wishful thinking by the media.

When Liverpool and Brugge were negotiating, that was the figure coming from the Liverpool side. Rangers weren't in the picture until Brugge didn't take that deal forwards (at whatever actual price was bring dsciussed); but Klopp had already said that there would be no loan this season, and Kent was a long way from being in first team contention at Liverpool.

So when the Brugge deal fell through, Liverpool were very keen to make a sale and only Rangers appeared to be an option at that point. A rational person might think that "whatever you will give us" would be an acceptable deal to Liverpool, as long as any low-ball amount didn't get trumpeted around. Sell for a nominal amount, and everyone's happy.

Neither club has disclosed a fee, and Rangers have explicitly called it "an undisclosed fee". There's no reason to think that the fee was anything in the region of £7m. There is simply no data in the public domain from either party to support that notion.

Tbf yeah, pretty straightforward to say the up front fee isn't going to be £7M. Reckon that figure will also be including the wages over the 4 years and they'll be paying in installments.

How did Kent get to transfer after the window SLAMMED shut?  Transfermarkt shows his transfer date as 2nd September and the Rangers site article is dated the 3rd.  Was he a free agent or something?

ETA: Ignore me (as usual).  Forgot the transfer window SLAMMED shut on the 2nd, not the 1st.

Its the SPFL/SFA cabal we're dealing with here and they indubitably do what they have to do for their pet club/company.  If it was any other team's registration, then . . . . . . . . . . . . .  .

It's a huge conspiracy, Scottish football fans must be ready to take on the SFA and Sevco here!!!!?

FWIW the Kent deal is being reported as £2m up front, and will reach £6.5m at most.

That's what the BBC said initially, and are still saying.

However, Rangers are officially quite explicit: the fee remains undisclosed. They actually state that on the club website; but someone is apparently briefing that a significant fee has been paid (or journalists are being lazy, or both), and the reasons for such briefing are open to conjecture.

(While Liverpool don't state it is undisclosed, they haven't disclosed a figure.)

So there is still absolutely no official information on any fee paid, and all of the numbers and terms being stated are without any provenance. That's why I compare it to the great new retail deal in 2017: until actual data emerges, it is almost certain that anything appearing in the media is spin. Although perhaps a better comparison would be with a new "billionaire" owner, with anyone doubting that fact being seen as a denier rather than simply a skeptic. 8 years on, no actual evidence is needed for good news down Ibrox way.

I'm not fine with the former at all, given that Killie accepted less than what the player was valued at. I'm still seething (to use the favourite word of OF drones on here). I don't care who either cheek signs otherwise, and it's only by accident that I know you're referring to Ryan Kent.

I always liked your analysis, Shug.  You know this as we've discussed it many times.

What's happened to turn you in to EveryDiddy?
