Imagine the sfa trying to help a member club win some prestige for Scotland in a European cup final, just imagine that.

Whatever was he thinking....

Imagine the SFA trying to wreck the very biggest day in a member club's entire history.  Just imagine that.

As pointed out, it wouldn't have helped Rangers' Manchester excursion anyway.  We all know exactly what he was thinking, and it displayed contemptuous arrogance.  A total shit of a man.

Was that the season your club wanted an Old Firm game postponed after the death of a player who had left the club almost a decade earlier? Celtic were of form , struggling best player out of the game.

Fast forward a few months

True club legend tragically dies and no calls for postponement as Rangers are dead on their feet.

Dundee United who were the opposition that tragic day at Motherwell asked for their next game to be postponed but were forced to play as planned despite their players witnessing the tragic death of Phil O Donnell

Forget the end of season bullshit. That was the real scandal that year and yet again the footballing authorities made an absolute bollocks of it.

I'll whisper it, but I've actually got some sympathy for this view.

Except the UEFA Cup Final was played - and lost - a fortnight before the date they wanted to put the Scottish Cup Final onto... Redating it would have been solely to assist you with SPL games.

It would have given Rangers some breathing space before playing a European cup final, which was far more important than any league title.

Wrongly pointed out, an extended season would have allowed more games to be played after the European cup final, rather than cramming them in before.

You got the Gretna games postponed to give you a week to prepare for the Zenit game...then got the league extended to help you, funny how your victim complex plays tricks on your mind.

That makes absolutely no sense at all.

You didn't have to play 2 games in 3 days until after the UEFA Cup Final (courtesy the league season being extended): until then your tempo of matches was a standard weekend > midweek > weekend > midweek... are you suggesting that, with no free dates and 2 league games still to be dated, you should have been given a blank 7 days or more resulting in a further undated game?

Why should their opposition move our national cup final to help their opponents?
Oh and admittance of bias from the SFA there?

When you look at how hectic that schedule and what a European cup win would have meant for Scottish football, was giving Rangers a free week really that big an ask.

It wouldn't have meant a great deal in truth.

You'd be better describing it as a European trophy than cup.  It could be misleading otherwise.

Of course it would have raised Scottish footballs profile.

Misleading?

I always love how Rangers fans in particular like to make out that everything they do in Europe is for the benefit of Scottish football.

Never really understood this argument to be honest.

Rangers kid on that what they wanted help with was to win the UEFA cup. Nonsense.

They wanted help to win the UEFA cup and also for it not to f**k up their chances of winning the league and Scottish cup as well.

This is the point that your post founders on:  All three Scottish clubs who have won European trophies, your own included, would have forsaken domestic titles for European success..  I know that supporters of your own club, in its season of glory, would not have swapped their CWC win for the a league title - though you came within a baw hair (or a bad draw against Hibs) of carrying off three trophies that year.

I actually think that we weren't good enough to win the EL in 2008 whatever preparation we'd been given beforehand, that our best player was Wattie, and that we'd have been found out anyway.  However, any Rangers fan I know would have happily swapped a league title for another European trophy (however theoretical that was).  So your point that, "They wanted help to win the UEFA cup and also for it not to f**k up their chances of winning the league" is utter nonsense.

You also missed the major point on this topic - as do most posters.  Peatgate isn't about whether Rangers received/didn't receive help. It's about a chairman of a club lifting the phone to the SFA Chairman and asking that they don't receive help in a European competition which has absolutely no implications for any other club in Scotland.

This is why I often refer to Scotland as a nasty, pernicious wee country and, to your credit, you are the only poster who actually agreed with the chairman who phoned Peat.  Still, what a shite way to live your life.
