East of Scotland Cup: Spartans and City lock horns in Semi tonight

Posted on Tuesday, March 28th, 2017

Spartans go head to head with local rivals Edinburgh City tonight in the semi final of the East of Scotland Cup at Ainslie Park (7.45pm KO).

After Saturday’s draw at home v Gala, gaffer Dougie Samuel’s attempts to edge closer to further silverware have been boosted by the return to the squad of Alan Brown, Mikey Herd and Jack Hay. The talismanic Dave Greenhill is in line for a starting berth after his cameo appearance at the weekend.

Paul Thomson remains doubtful after receiving a dull one against Gala.

City will look to build on their vital win against Elgin that saw Gary Jardine’s men take a step closer to Division 2 survival at the first time of asking.

Tonight’s winners will go on to face Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale in the Final.

The game will be streamed live as part of a pilot project undertaken by the Lowland League.  The stream will be managed by Youth Football Scotland who the league is working with to explore live streaming opportunities.

Despite playing for Hibs, Celtic and Scotland, Deeks always dreamed of playing in the City Cup as a lad! ;)

Derek Riordan has never actually won a cup, AFAICS. He received a Scottish Cup medal for 2006-07 but as an unused substitute.

According to last nights programme City will be ground sharing with Spartans next season and it will be for 3 years.

Is Meadowbank definitely getting flattened this summer? There's still nothing been released confirming what's going to be built. I'd be surprised if it's gone this time next year

Is it confirmed too that City will be taking up residence at the redeveloped Meadowbank? I thought I read somewhere that there was a query over that.

Hope the move to Spartans works out anyway, City going back home in a way.

Edinburgh City FC on the move

City on the move

Edinburgh City FC is delighted to announce that they have entered into an agreement with The Spartans Community Stadium Limited to use Ainslie Park Stadium for all home matches whilst Meadowbank Stadium is being redeveloped. The agreement, which is subject to SPFL Board approval and SLFL approval will see City play at the home of Spartans FC for the next three seasons.

City Chairman James Lumsden commented “I’m absolutely delighted that we’ll be moving to what is a tremendous footballing facility at Ainslie Park whilst Meadowbank is being redeveloped. I’d like to thank Craig Graham and the rest of the Board at Spartans for all of their help in putting this agreement together. Although both clubs have been close rivals on the park, we’ve always been good friends off it and I’m sure this agreement will benefit both clubs going forward.”

By my reckoning if Edusport came up from SOSL and Clyde / Edinburgh City came down from SPFL2, there could be 7 groundshares out of 16 clubs in LL next season. Remarkable.

Commonwealth Stadium in current configuration actually holds 16,500 (including 7,500 grandstand).

5,000-odd is City's safe operating grandstand capacity; while bankings have been abandoned.

Leith use 3G other side of the sports centre:

Plan to demolish entire complex: velodrome, 3G, sports centre, Commonwealth Stadium... sell half... and rebuild rest as sports centre, 3G and small athletics stadium.

Ainslie Park is already used by Spartans U20s and Edusport Academy U20s on Friday evenings and Spartans Women and Hibs Women on Sunday afternoons so it'll be pretty busy.

Don't Leith Athletic share Meadowbank? Where will they move in the meantime... can you have three clubs at the same ground?

What form is the redevelopment taking? Surely the 5k capacity is more than enough?

If it was a 5k capacity that would certainly be enough - that's the official capacity of the current stand. The first proposal is for a 500 capacity stand, aligned with the finish line of the athletics track rather than the half way line. There are other issues with which the club are seeking discussions with the Council.

The pictures that HJ posted looks like it retains some terracing, is that an option?

No, not as things stand - all the area behind the goal and along the far side is earmarked for housing, and there is no provision for standing accommodation. It's not really terracing anyway - there were wooden benches there which rotted away and were removed a couple of seasons ago. The steps are too high for safe terracing, and in any case there are rusty metal fittings all over them.

Fortunately Spartans have two pitches that can be utilised as well. A nice little earner going for them right now. Forutnately, the village hotel has opened now as there wouldn't be a boozer nearby for a 20 minute walk.
