Edinburgh City

Recommended Posts

Elgin is one of the favourite away days for most groups of travelling fans ,too, so there is much more interest in a trip there rather than one of the MFI flatpack stadiums in the Central belt or Fife. Travelling supports at weekends there must hold up pretty well.

I have no problem with Edinburgh having a small support to begin with. Meadowbank came within a whisker of promotion to the Premier League in 1988 with a part time team and regular sub-300 crowds. One of the most boring Montrose games I've ever witnessed was a 0-0 stalemate at Meadowbank in the early 90s under Doug Rougvie, a freezing day under slate grey skies and awful football. This was in the old first division. Attendance: 188

Edinburgh are completely different to the old Meadoewbank Thistle in that they seem much more of a community club with age group teams, community programmes, and so on. Thistle never had that.

I imagine Edinburgh will see quite big crowds for the first four or five months until the novelty wears off. But expect them to grow a bit more of a hardcore support in their first couple of seasons in the leagues.

As to their fans not posting on here, I suspect that they are having a long lingering farewell in the Lowland League forum.

Meadowbank was a hurried compromise anyway as they weren't allowed to call themselves Ferranti Thistle by the SFL.

Agree tht Edinburgh City has a much wider appeal for the whole city. I must admit I am *astonished* to see that name back in the leagues. Whe I started watching football in the eighties "Edinburgh City" were a historical name like Solway Star, Galston, Cowlairs and seemed gone forever; a footnote in football history.

Of course it's a different club, but it will take a bit of getting used to.

Aye you need to be a bit careful with Clyde fans. They're awful precious. Always harking back to the days they were relevant even though they're now only about the 4th biggest club in the bottom tier.

Word of warning about Berwick fans, they'll be hoping you amalgamate with Hibs and Hearts at some point in the near future to form an Edinburgh City team only. Atleast you'll get to keep your name.

The Mo fans are the happy lot of the forum. Literally get absolutely buzzing over signing bang average players and finishing 8th. Harmless lot in reality except from when they face us and the #MoYoungTeam come out in force with their smoke bombs and thuggery.

It's been a while since we've had Forfar in the league so can't comment to much on the Bridie munching fermers but watch yourself at Cowdenbeath. Quite a few neds in their support at their ram shackle stadium and they hate moving ends at half time and love scrapping. Not a friendly bunch. BE A WEAR.

Stirling fans are fine on the whole but be prepared to hear them criticise your ground. Heard on numerous occasions about Gayfields crumbling terracing from them. They can be very critical of grounds/stadia.

Annan are quite a quiet bunch and Pismoondo loves a post after being on the bevy. A sound bunch on the whole but they do not seem to rate Kevin Nicoll for some reason which makes me believe they don't have much footballing knowledge. As Kevin Nicoll is a footballing genius.

Elgin fans are a good bunch that are Craig Gunn daft, which makes total sense, good ground and social club.

And of course the Arbroath fans, Angus' premier football club, are all very very #dece on the whole and the team plays football #TheArbroathWay. We are also world record holders and we love to go on about it.

Enjoy and I look forward to a day trip to Edinburgh. ;)

I hope Edinburgh City establish themselves in senior football. For selfish reasons: I fancy a couple of days out in Edina. And for less selfish reasons: I watched a couple of Edinburgh's matches this year and was quite impressed; like Annan before them, I reckon they'll make things more competitive before long.

Welcome to the basement, Tam and company.

I cannot see how after the struggle Meadowbank had to attract support how decades later with all the other attractions computer games etc it will be any different this time. That said im looking forward to going despite how awful it was in the 70s 80s 90s.....

Historically Edinburgh clubs other than Hearts and Hibs have struggled. Okay, St Bernards won the Scottish Cup in 1895 but their fortunes declined from then on. Leith Athletic didn't fare too well either. Meadowbank decamped to Livingston to get out of the big two's shadows.

I wish City well though.
