2016/2017 Championship Squad Lists

Recommended Posts

I reckon St Mirren will be a different proposition in the new season.

Essentially there was two St Mirren's last season. Ian Murray's St Mirren, which had relegation form, and Alex Rae's St Mirren which had promotion playoff form. We got half of a season of each and thus ended up in mid table obscurity.

Now we are going into a full season of Alex Rae's stewardship with a clearly stronger squad than we had last year, we should be relatively confident of a top 4 berth.

Let's calm down a bit here. You never at any point had promotion or playoff form. You did much better second half of the season and probably finished the season as the best of the rest. Certainly in better form than ourselves and Morton. Apart from Hibs awful run towards the back end of the season though your form wasn't better than any of the clubs who went into the playoffs.

If the league table had started on the day of Alex Rae's first game in charge we would have finished fourth. We were the fourth best team in the league under his management.

Fourth is in the playoffs. Struggling to see how you can say that's not promotion playoff form.

As for having better form than yourself, you're certainly right there. We were 10 points below you when Rae was appointed and finished above you.

Which one of the top four were you above in this table then? Do you have a link to it?

Hibs I would think.

I would guess so but for all the slapstick comedy of Hibs late season run last season it's a pretty big stretch to suggest in reality that St Mirren were better than them after Rae arrived. Hibs were still a much better side. St Mirren are well placed this season. Rae looks to have recruited well and they should be more like the team we expected to see last season. Raith are likely to have gone backwards and Dundee United are a bit of a mystery at the moment. It's entirely reasonable that St Mirren fans are optimistic from last season's finish. However, last season's form even under Rae wasn't really good enough to be playoff form and Hibs comedy run is all that's allowing that statistical anomaly.

Hibs. Can't find the link now but if memory serves me correctly we got one point more than them since Rae's appointment, which is promotion playoff form.

Well playoff form doesn't necessarily have to be good form. Fourth is mid table in a shite league, it's hardly something to crow about, but it gets you in the playoffs. You don't have to be a good side or be in particularly good form to be in promotion playoff form.

The 'statistical anomaly' of Hibs didn't affect Morton, QOTS or Dumbarton. All of whom were better than us under Murray and worse than us under Rae.

Well yes but as none of those sides were playoff teams that is no relevance here.I already agreed you were the best of the rest. The fact is though that even under Rae the top four were better than you. Even if Hibs daft league run through Feb & March allows you to claim more points over a select period.

So Hibs were better than us, but got less points?

Yes. Are you seriously suggesting you were better than Hibs at any stage last season?

Well I'm not the league table from the end of December onwards is, maybe it's lying.

Don't think that is right.

Rae was appointed on 18 December which gave him 20 league games in charge. St.Mirren got 30 points from those games. Hibs got 32 points from their last 20 games.

Even if you just take the second half of the season, St.Mirren got 27 points and Hibs got 29 from the 18 games.

Edited to correct Hibs total to 32.
