Haha - no change there then. Lad is unbelievably frustrating. Pace, strength and character but lacks the skills and finishing ability to be a professional footballer.  Good luck to him but he is indeed fairly shite.

We had an injury time corner which Lee came up for and caused a bit of confusion. It fell to Millar on the edge of the box and his deflected shot was saved. Somewhere in the stramash a Thistle defender got a head knock I think after a clash with Hilson. Was certainly Dale standing beside him anyway. No idea why the referee didnt just stop play for treatment but he didnt and their keeper threw it out instead. Rather than give them the ball back, which would clearly have ended the game, Hamill went to take a long throw and everyone including Robinson piled into the box again.

Fortunately it came to nothing as it was headed away and the whistle went.

Actual scenes if we had scored. Jamie hamill going to be the one guy opposition fans hate. Needed someone to take over from beany.

With Lyle and Higgins we have the core of a great heel team, if we can find a Stephen McKenna style hard tackling centre mid we'll be well on our way back to the peak of the 2013/14 side when it comes to being hated by away fans. Hamill at this level is that unique mixture of being good and being insane, something I can definitely get behind.

Personally I was disappointed that we abandoned our high pressing game in favour of a pretty defensive starting formation with Anderson and Hilson spending most of their time early on marking the Thistle full backs. Hope this is not a sign of things to come in the Championship  - Lyle in the lone striker role simply does not work and it seems  to take a succession of Managers half a season to work that out. To Skelton's credit he made some decent changes but I was mystified about Dykes' omission in what was a pretty important game.

Overall though a decent performance but ultimately a shambolic end to what should have been a good days work.

As others have said we need a left sided midfielder urgently.

How's that Hampden pitch?

Just been relayed.   New pitch was uplifted from Scunthorpe area on Friday 4am and arrived at Hampden before noon on Friday and relaid immediately.

Not sure how it gets much chance to bed in, seems really quick to be playing on it.

I'd imagine a harder test for Airdrie than Saturday.

anyway onto the football thought it was a really good game between two decent teams, queens gave partick too much respect but as soon as we changed to 4-4-2 we looked a lot better, was surprised he dropped dykes as felt he done well when he came on. thistle look dangerous erskine was best player on the park. need to win on saturday now

Had a wee look at the fixtures and points to date just to see what might be needed. It will clear up a bit tomorrow night after matchday 4 but I think clubs will need 9 points and a GD of at least +4 to get in, possibly a bit more.

It's already clear that any club who gets 10 will get in, either as group winners or a best runner up. It looks likely there will be 2 or 3 runners up with 10 points and therefore 1 or 2 teams with 9 pts will get through. With at least 4 groups likely to have a runner up get 9 points it might only be the best of them on GD terms gets through.

Group A - If East Fife beat Forfar, either in 90 minutes or on penalties, they are through. A penalty win probably means as runners up to Dundee who will also go through with two wins over Peterhead and Forfar. Peterhead in theory could go through but would need to beat both Dundee and Dumbarton in 90 minutes and probably by more than one goal each.

Group B - St Johnstone will win the group. Nobody else can get through in reality (it would take two big wins from either Brechin or Stirling to have a chance and they both have St Johnstone to play).

Group C - The most complicated. United have 7, Dunfermline 6 and ICT 4 and they all have each other to play + ICt have a game against Arbroath. If United and ICT both beat Dunfermline then they'll likely both get 10 and both go through. Dunfermline could get a win and a draw to go through themselves. If they do through ICT would pretty much be out and United would need to get the draw and win the penalty shoot out not to also be out.

Group D - If Raith beat Alloa either outright or on pens they'll go through. If County beat Alloa and Cove Rangers they will too. Alloa can still go through themselves but would need at least 3 and probably 4 from the two games which would knock out Raith and probably County if they don't clock up a cricket score against Cove.

Group E - Thistle will probably win the group by Collecting 4 pts from Queens Park & Stenny. We will hopefully get 9 by beating Stenny and if we do we'll have a GD of at least +4.

Group F - Rangers will win it with just a draw against Stranraer. Motherwell will probably beat Stranraer and East Stirling to get 9 points. GD currently 0 so they'll need to get at least a 4 goal margin over the two games and possibly more. Theoretically Stranraer could go through but they'd need 4 points from Rangers and Motherwell to do it.

Group G - Nobody can get more than 9 points in this group. Accies look best placed to win it with 2 wins over Edinburgh City and Livi. St Mirren would need to hammer Edinburgh City to get anywhere given a -1 GD now. Ayr would probably need a decent win over Livi. It looks unlikely a runner up will get through from this one but still possible.

Group H - Morton should beat Berwick to win the group. If Killie beat Berwick and Albion Rovers beat Clyde on Tuesday then they will be head to head for runners up. Presuming Killie win two games they'll need to win them by at least 5 in total margin to be in contention.

From our point of view then, Forfar doing us a turn tomorrow would be ideal. If East Fife win then it's likely only the best GD 9 point runner up will get in which means we need to win and outdo Motherwell and Killie as well as whoever finishes 2nd in Group G. If Forfar get something then we probably only need to get ahead of one of them. There will be twists and turns yet no doubt though.

Excellent work SD.  It's precisely the sort of update I wanted to read but would in no cirumstances put in the necessary effort to provide, myself.

Losing on Saturday so late, really might well have knackered us, eh?

Famous last words, because we're probably perfectly capable of losing the game, but I'd really like us to go for goals when we play Stenhousemuir.  It looks like we have a decent chance of getting there if we can beat them by about three.

Already though, this post feels presumptuous.

Stenhousemuir brought 34 fans to New Broomfield on Saturday yet collect half the overall gate money.

Highlights from the match here.

You get to take 10% for costs.

It's a bit swings and roundabouts as Thistle took around 900 to the Excelsior game.

Ironic, given they ran out of pies before half time today

Apparently all kiosks ran out of food around this time.

They also underestimated our support to Airdrie by 400-500 in the info sent to the home club.

Stenny have announced all fans will be in the main stand. Again they can only go on estimates received from the visiting team. It's likely after some faffing about with the stewards they'll need to open up a section of terracing if a crowd of 500-600 away fans turn up?

It seems the summer work experience kid has been given to much responsibility? :whistle

15% to be pedantic. And Airdrie brought 106 fans to Palmerston last Tuesday and get "half the gate". Not sure what he's getting on his high horse about.

And either way, it's irrelevant.  It was a Cup tie that could as easily have been at the opposing venue.

Both clubs provided a team each.  If that hadn't happened, nobody would have shown up.

Yeah I know what you mean. I'm not counting chickens. Beating Stenny at home is likely but not a formality and if we don't win in 90 minutes then we're out, End of. It may look a bit clearer by Wednesday but at the moment we probably need to get 3 or 4 goals, maybe more if Motherwell or St Mirren or Kilmarnock, etc knock up a cricket score somewhere.

It's a little galling. We could have avoided this by not losing a last minute goal on Saturday or made our task easier by going on and winning either of the previous games by more than the 2-0 we led each at half time. We hit woodwork twice against Airdrie and thrice against Thistle too and were denied a stonewall penalty against Queens Park. We could have been out of sight in goal difference terms but I expect everyone has similar tales. We just need to go out and do what we can now and hope it's enough.
