Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

I'd be surprised if it's McCann because Wright has talked about giving him and McClean a chance next season. It wont be Euan O'Reilly either as he seems to be Airdrie bound for a loan spell. Given the level you're playing at, McClean and McCann make most sense though. Perhaps Ross Sinclair - a very young  but equally highly rated goalkeeper that we have - or possibly Steven Anderson if you're in the market for a centre half?

Won’t be in the market for a GK or a defender of Anderson’s calibre I wouldn’t think. Will probably look for a centre mid, a winger/striker and some defensive cover.

What positions do Struthers and Ballantyne play?

Forward and central midfielder respectively.

I'd be surprised if either is yet at the level of playing every week in the Championship but they could surprise me.

Someone throw taffies a bone, poor wee thing is sniffing about at our feet as usual.

I briefly forgot the golden rule of " dont argue with a fool because those watching wont be able to tell the difference " there

Seemingly, although don't know how much there is to it, we're signing the boy Euan O'Reilly from yourselves on a season-long loan. What sort of player is he? Good enough to make an impact in League 1?
Old fashioned winger type. Good touch and pacey.

Ali McCann to a Championship side would be preferable to him being fourth choice with us, IMO.

If it means we've to sign a jobber like Ness to make up the numbers then thats fine by me.

Well, there’s your first signing lads.

No idea if he’s any good at football but he’d certainly do some damage on Love Island.

Theres literally nothing to read about him, a complete unknown.

Spoiler

From trawling Celtic forums he was fairly well thought of, but they never expected him to break into the first team with the likes of Ralston around. He then got absolutely savaged by Glenn Middleton in a match against Rangers and got subbed off and his stock there plummeted. Hes now overage for youth teams and Celtic aren't in the reserve league, so assume they feel theres no point keeping him around.

Match highlights he looks tall and fairly quick, and has scored a couple of goals from right back. Expect we'll have the usual issues with Celtic youths, in that he'll be clueless positionally and struggle defensively. The fact hes never played a senior game probably suggests he'll get bullied a bit early on as he gets to grips with things.

All in all, my guess is this season will be absolute hell for him and he'll get smashed about in training and get a hard time from coaches, games he play he'll struggle and get criticism, but this time next Summer he should have enough basics to go with the physical attributes to step in to a starting role.

Put what I've found/guess/own thoughts in Spoilers since folk might want to just ignore it.

Suppose we can only wait and see but I doubt anyone will be swaggering around today after hearing about this one.

Be interesting to hear from the manager if this lad is indeed going to be our only other right back. I think that's a risk and isn't usually the sort of thinking that Tommy Wright would employ. It doesn't matter how good he thinks Duffy is, there is no way of knowing how he'll adapt to first team football as there is no evidence on which to build a case.

Save our cash for a couple of decent starting 11 players.

You obviously never know how any signing will work out but I like to think it's about minimising risk. What happens if this lad isn't required in the first few weeks of the season then the week after the window closes, Foster is ruled out long-term and we discover that Duffy is chronic? We don't have another right back.

Too risky for me.

My thinking is Foster and Duffy will be the only "specialist" right backs, and he'll attempt to sign a CB who has played RB before.

Think his move for Declan Gallagher maybe highlights the type of player we'll get.

Like Tanser you mean?

I know what you're meaning but Saints need to take risks now and again, Lennon rates the guy enough to give Tommy the heads up and Saints will have seen the guy enough in the youth set ups to see he has qualities. I'd rather take risks on back up players who we can afford than the likes of marquee signing like scougall on ridiculous money

Also known as the Shay Logan gamble.

That's my thinking.

Playing the majority of last season with one fit left back was more of a risk.  He wasn't our only left footed defender.  When Easton got injured, not many folk were happy at the prospect of Tanser being our starting left back. But the fact that no matter how poor he was at times, there was no one else meant he kept his place and has developed into a good reliable player for us.

I'm guessing the feeling is if Wallace has been at Celtic up to this age he will have all the basics there, he will just need coaching and experience of competitive matches.

Or perhaps indicates a current contract hold out centre back who can play right back will be with us next season after all.

I'm still sulking at you because of you kiboshed the Tam Scobbie love a couple of days ago. Take this as my retribution.
