Have we found a bit of fight when things go against us?

Last season we collapsed straight away when referees decisions or goals went against us.

Noticed when we conceded people were already geeing up people and getting them set up again. Last season we’d have sulked back into the starting position and it showed.

If we could somehow find a ball winning defensive midfielder who can keep the ball with simple passes it feels like it could make a massive difference.

We were crying out for it in that second half. You feel it would also get MacPherson, Carey and Hallberg on the ball more, who have shown they can play a bit at times, though obviously all need to do it more consistently and for full 90 minutes.
It looks like we’re rooted to 5 at the back, but I don’t understand why we’ve gone back to the 5-2-3-surrender-midfield formation.
If we’re sticking with 5 at the back, I’d like to see us try:

                       Matthews

       McGowan Mitchell Considine

Wright                                        Montgomery

                        new DM

        Hallberg MacPherson Carey

                         May or Bair

maybe harsh on Murphy after scoring today, but he’d be a decent attacking option from the bench.

Got to congratulate the team for fighting to the end and winning goal. We needed this win to take the pressure off during the difficult next three games. Well done again. I always think when you get Willie Collum as ref he will be strict but always fair.

As we've all discussed. What a difference with a player in the middle of the park who isn't a hindrance when the ball is moved into his feet.

MacPherson in there made a difference today. Not shy to take it under pressure. Not shy to try that adventurous pass, maybe needs to work on the decision making sometimes with how to execute the pass but I'm sure that will improve. I was quite critical of him last season at times because he'd often give the ball away but thought today was much more like it. (Ayr first half also!)

Mitchell, the guy needs help. Absolute rock and will stick his head on anything. Seems a huge competitior and battler.

Was Macpherson actually good or just an improvement on the normal dross he churns out? It’s a wee bit concerning that our standards have dropped enough to be saying he made a difference unless it was a huge uplift in performance from the usual.

Yes. Otherwise I wouldn't have said it.

I thought MacPherson was very good in the first half.  Probably the stand out midfielder on the park.

He had a bit of a howling first 5 mins after HT and from thereon motherwell’s change of shape that we didn’t respond to meant we were completely outnumbered in midfield second half so less opportunity to be on the ball.  He still had a few decent moments and tried to find a pass when he was in possession.

I thought McPhersons performance was acceptable in the first half, still loads of passes to the opposition, still some to imaginary players etc but at least he was getting in the ball in space. When closed down early the boy is still a bombscare, see second half. We need better in there if we want to progress up the league.

A striker and a fast technical one at that is still the same priority it was 2 years ago. I also thought Zander would've kept that goal out and can't understand why nobody protects this new keeper at corners, they just let the opposition block him, that's just stupid.

Mitchell looks good, Hallberg, Montgomery and Murphy had decent games as well imo.

It does maybe sound harsh but acceptable is a good summary of MacPherson's performance. What he's shown so far is the basic level he needs to attain, then hopefully he can kick on.

For an hour plus yesterday he was looking for the ball, prepared to take a touch and was alert to passing opportunies. World away from when Murray Davidson is in there. I think that when we are playing alright, he looks fine, basically.

But in that 20-minute period between the first change and the equaliser, our central midfielder touched the ball 6 times. THAT remains a problem. Gave away a foul, got his head on two balls and made three long passes, which in reality were probably just hoofs away. He attempted no tackles and made no interceptions, blocks or clearances.

Ironically, Murray Davidson would have been a good change to make in the closing stages, although it wouldn't have helped us look after the ball better, which we desperately needed to do.

Yesterday was better than last week but there is still a long way to go.

Not interesting enough for Sportscene obviously (imagine it was Jota, would have taken up half the programme).

That’s very true, they would have been raving about it. It was actually a great  cross but Motherwell defended it well. Think Hendry might have had the hunger to get on the end of it though.

Someone made the valid point yesterday about how we stop doing everything that’s working well when we go ahead. I think you can adapt and play on the counter more, but you still have to cause the opposition a problem. Davidson’s in-game management is poor, so reactionary. If the opposition haven’t scored yet we are content, regardless of how the momentum is building against us.  I think most Saints fans can generally predict when opposition goals are coming.

It goes back to radford’s point about entertainment; if we score in the first minute should we just be content with defending and holding on for 89 minutes?! I used to get pissed off with Maclean taking the ball to the corner flag anytime we were ahead in the last 10 minutes.  Fair enough if it’s against the OF or a cup semi final or something, but in every routine match I thought it was shite to watch, I’d rather see us try to score another.

But, as Kyle said, scoring a last minute winner is a buzz for everyone, and will really help bond the players together.

Bizarrely, I think this is now our best start to a season after two matches for 5 years.

Thing is and I wasn’t at the game so can’t confirm if this is correct. We were actually on top in another first half, similar to the Ayr game and for some inexplicable reason come out after half time and play worse. You’ve got to wonder what the hell the management team are saying to the players in the changing room!
