Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

That was brilliant today.

Thought we rode our luck in the first 15 minutes or so, similar to Celtic at home, and it might have been over early on the way we were hemmed in.

But we grew into the game, and in the second half put in a superb performance, defending solidly but also providing a threat on the counter.

We tried to keep the ball when we won it back, which led to some nerve wracking moments early on as we dribbled and passed the ball cross the edge of our own box, but it eventually paid off as we had some great passages of play stringing passes together to get out.  Compared to some OF games we’ve played where we just hammer it straight back to them.

Was going to start naming players who did well, but you’d just about name everyone today.

Credit to the manager.  Davidson got the tactics and subs spot on. Swapping McGowan back into midfield when he did was the right move at the right time as well.

Must say I'm surprised that the move Ryan McGowan needed to revitalise his career was moving further up the pitch and becoming a no-nonsense midfielder, but fair play to him.

Aye, he was a guaranteed dud for me when it was announced.

Some turnaround Davidson is having as well.

Decent in a back 3 as well but had played well in recent months in midfield

As a Dundee fan you'll enjoy the most his performance at Tannadice in midfield was up there with his best. Not sure if it was experience or what it was but he was miles ahead of the United midfield.

He was signed initially though to play right of a three.

f**k me. No sane Saints fan can truthfully say Callum Davidson is a good manager. EVERY one has had doubts, most still do. We are all Saints fans and want the club to do well but It'll take a lot more than what's being served up just now to convince me that Callum actually knows what he's doing.

My point has only ever been that Callum Davidson has never shown he can build a squad with the future in mind, and that combined with his inability to adapt without his strongest team will cause problems for a club like us.

Hes built a good squad this season but he wont be able to sign 5/6 proven Premiership players every Summer so that's where the challenge is. If he can show signs of being able to identify and sign younger talent and build a younger core ill be happy, if he can show signs he can adapt to key players being unavailable/out of form ill be happy. As it is i intend on enjoying this season but remain worried we'll just be a bad window away from another relegation battle as we wont have built a core to see us through the next 3/4 years.

Ill never understand why having that viewpoint has been twisted into me hating the manager and having some vandetta to get him sacked, as seems to be constantly suggested.

Yeh it’s easy to lord it up because we’re on a good wee run. But pretending everything was fine last season and in many of the games this season is just silly and naive.

If everyone just quietly accepts when we put in poor performances then where is the pressure to do better?

Posting constructive criticism on the internet is fine, I’m sure the manager doesn’t read or care about it too much anyway.  And nobody can criticise how well St Johnstone fans have stuck behind their team despite the massive disappointment of last season, continued into the early part of this one.

That today was one of Callum Davidson’s best performances as a manager since we won the Scottish Cup, great to see. We’re looking solid in defence and with a threat going forward.

But we’re far from the finished article; we’ve carried an element of luck in the two recent OF home matches which on other occasions we might have been a couple of goals behind before we even got going, we’ve yet to put in a 90 minute performance, and we also still haven’t shown we’re completely comfortable taking a game to other teams around us in the league.

But the signs are positive and we look to be heading in the right direction. Long may it continue.

Whilst Callum has his preferred formation yesterday was a great example of the squad performing to its fullest. Everyone stepped up, and the subs made were the right choices at the right time.

Even Theo Bair is looking good when he’s coming off the bench.

It’s still far from the finished article, but we’re showing signs of something within the squad.

You always get supporters who believe unwavering loyalty gets them their most bestest fan badge. Must be even easier when you don't clock up thousands of miles, spend thousands of pounds and give up hundreds of hours following your club every season... Add in the complication of course of having a personal relationship with the manager too.

CLEARLY everyone will be happy with the last three results and our place in the table/points total but it's just burying your head in the sand to not be aware of the bigger picture...

xG-xGA Table:

Celtic +1.54
Rangers +1.49
Hibernian +0.75
Motherwell +0.09
St Mirren -0.28
Hearts -0.30
Kilmarnock -0.38
Aberdeen -0.40
Livingston -0.49
Dundee United -0.52
St Johnstone -0.84
Ross County -0.88

We were badly outworked at Kilmarnock and Livingston. We were getting absolutely nothing at Easter Road before the red card either.

The players showed yesterday how hard they can work though, so there is no excuse for not producing that every week now. The quality won't always be there but they've set the standard for work ethic.

Everyone that lost faith in the manager wants him to prove them wrong but nobody will need the complimentary ticket brigade to highlight that if it happens. We'll all hold our hands up.
