Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

Desperately hoping the lack of other rumours means the second signing emoji is for Clark or Hendry extending their deals.

Money is on Macey or Drey Wright.

Wow, that was quick. When's Frank coming in?

I got it wrong, its Jack Hamilton who'll be our next keeper.

Hmm.

Considine I can live with if he’s the backup to Cleary/Mahon/Gordon and another new left sided centre back.

Wright I always liked well enough when he was playing in front of Foster at the start of his first stint at Saints. Since then not much of anything has worked for him. Maybe playing RWB will suit him in this system, but he has an awful lot to do to make this work.

Neither signing scream imagination and/or a change of tack from last season.

It's lazy, which is Davidsons approach to transfers in a nutshell.

You'd have thought we'd have learned our lessons from MOH and May, but nope, let's chuck another huge multi-year deal at a former player who's absolutely fucking flopped in the years since he left.

The loss of Shaun Rooney was a tough one to take, but not in the sense that he was a particularly exceptional footballer or anything like that. It's just the knowledge that we'll never find another player who plays like him. A unique, once-in-a-generation enigma.

Bearing this in mind, I'm happy to accept a more regular option to replace him. I'll take Drey Wright. I always quite liked him tbh, with the caveat that he didn't provide attacking returns. However, I think he could do a decent job at RWB.

Having said that, the signing of Considine and return of Wright both seem a bit unadventurous. It doesn't bode well for our future transfer activity.

Who was a flop before we managed to offload him

Going to buck the trend here and say that both could turn out to be pretty decent signings. Considine before his injury was arguable in the best period of his career and despite his age, will do fine in a back 3. Back 4 might be a risk, but even with reducing pace his experience will get him through. I'm sure if he ends up crocked both he and Saints will have clauses inserted. Added bonus that we can also use him in some sort of an unofficial coaching capacity. Liam Gordon in particular is similar to Considine in terms or play and make up, so he can help him out.

On Dray Wright, he was hot and cold first time, but when he was hot, he was excellent. Will give us that bit of creativity we were massively lacking last season.

While neither will particularly blow the fans away, both are pretty solid signings and we know pretty much what to expect.

Mind too, they will not be the only ones arriving.

You know what I'm not as downbeat about these signings as I was with the majority of last years; however it's just utterly depressing that we're not even looking outside the box. Once again we're signing aging players and guys we've had before, say what you like about the failed recruitment specialist, but at least it provided some creativity and excitement, these are just boring signings.

The more I think about it, the more I'm ok with Considine signing up. We need an experienced defender and (and its a big if) he can play as well as he was pre-injury then he's a solid signing. Wonder if in exchange for a big deal he's been handed a 2 year deal and a route into coaching alongside Liam Craig.

As for Wright, I think I made my feelings on him very clear originally, he's a great player to watch on his day and can genuinely provide some excitement and run at players; however his output and underlying numbers were awful for a winger. If, and I suspect he has been brought in to play right wing back, I'm ok with it as he actually looked like a good option there before the covid season was ended early. He had pocketed Greg Taylor with ease the game previously and was actually a driving force up the pitch. That's not to say he'd be my first choice, nor even second, but if he can capture some of that form again then I'm ok with it.

The rest of the signings are giving me the fear though, since I'm not sure either of these guys are the "improvements" to the team that were claimed!

Morton have just signed a keeper on loan from Livingston today too so Hamilton might well be heading your way

As much as I love big Consi, the guy is 35 and injury prone. I think he’s done at this level IMO.

As for Drey, it’s a totally uninspiring signing and I’m not convinced he’ll be any good for us.

I’m going to sit back and enjoy this window, the amount of seeth on this thread is going to be fucking hilarious. Might be the only laugh we get before the season starts.

Aye.

Wright was awful with the odd game where he ran past someone more than once, after his injury. The idea that "getting him back to his best" means we have anything better than what we had with MOH at RWB is just daft.

Fans just repeating the same stuff they've been saying for about 3 years with MOH and May too, trying to convince themselves we can magically turn a player into a former version of themselves, which never actually existed.

We were comfortably the second worst side in the league last season and have just replaced McCart and Rooney with a crocked 35yo and winger who is so bad at being a winger Hibs had him just running about chasing the ball in midfield for 12 months.

We undoubtedly will, Craig Levein has probably told Davidson he's got huge potential and that'll be enough for us.
