Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

For me I find Saint Johnstone an absolute enigma for how well and badly they are run. They win the Scottish cup for the first time yet then take an age to put season books on sale and dish out any sort of memorabilia. At this point I think they have fucked it to grow as a club from unprecedented success then somehow get a rookie manager in his first season to win a fucking double, only to sell their main asset for well under his value in the last minute of the transfer window.
For a supposedly meh club they  dish out a fair bit of drama.

It's always been the cautious approach with our board.

I think our board are keen to establish us as a club who develop our own young players then sell them on at a profit, which is obviously the best model for us.  But they are terrified at the prospect of a contract running down and us losing players for nothing. Matt Kennedy in January 2020 was a good example in the middle of a relegation battle we sold him to Aberdeen for £70k rather than lose him for nothing 5 months later.  It worked out well for us that time.  We are likely to see Rooney and McCart go cheap this January as well, unless we somehow convince them to sign a new deal.

If ever there was a time to take a gamble for St Johnstone, it was this close season. A couple of extra quality players in and we really could have made the group stages in Europe and got the financial windfall. If we failed and had overstretched, we still would have made money back on player sales as we've just done, as well as nearly €1m for taking part.

We'll probably continue to be a decent middling Premiership club, hopefully with occasional standout seasons like the last one, as long as we continue to employ managers so well.  The minute we get that wrong then relegation would be a real possibility.

If we've taken a piss poor fee purely on the hope that he goes for a bigger one in the future then that's naive to the extreme. Preston don't have a great tradition of developing players and selling them on, they go through managers pretty quickly, relegation isn't out of the question for them so that could result in him being sold for £2m and it won't break Davidson's record, plus injuries can happen at any time.

Sell on clauses are designed to enhance the fee, not top it up to the level that it should've been at in the first place

What about if the clauses are things that look certain to happen, like International caps/league appearances, and take us over £2m, then you have the 25% on top of that?

Could easily mean them selling him for £8m takes us closer to £5m than £4m.

All a caveat on the 25% figure obvs.

Of course and it's a gamble, but it's a stupid one to take, especially when we currently have walking proof of how badly it can go down south after a big injury with Stevie May in the building. That £5m will be useful once we've fully transformed into Falkirk and play in League one in two years

Maybe Eetu wouldn’t have agreed more than 2 years but this is another one where Brown had to be brave and slap a 3 year deal in front of him with the understanding we’d let him move for a genuinely fair price. He is clearly a top class player who should come good once he settles in.

As it is, he’ll probably not settle into the team and a rhyme until December/January ish, then we’ll get a good six months out of him before selling him to Rochester Athletic Wanderers for 400k in the summer because he’s in the last year of his contract.

Also, we should be ringing up Clive to let him know the same contract we offered Melamed is on the table if he wants it… it would be nice to actually score some goals this season

Don’t be surprised to see him become a targeted panic signing in January alongside a Man City Loan, and maybe if we’re lucky a third rate striker from the Irish league who scored 10 in 8 matches then none in 40.

We'd have lost Kerr for nothing in 12 months, alongside Rooney and McCart. Probably needed to get money for one of them.
McCann deal could easily go over £4m, potentially about £5m. One I suspect will look a shite deal until it doesn't.
Thing is, it would really be 3 months when that bomb came sailing through the roof with a pre-contract.

MacPherson's quote, '"There are many quality players at the Football Club and I know I will need to produce my very best to get into the team.'

He obviously signed on before half them left.
