Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

Recommended Posts

Saints offered Tanser three years to try and bridge wages in offer elsewhere. Fact he's signed for a year at St Mirren should paint a pretty clear picture of what we were up against when it came to a basic salary package.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a player trying to make as much money as he can it should be added.

Ooft, never realised you lot were so desperate to keep him. Wasn’t he back up?

Aye, I think saying his time was up is fair enough and is the normal kind of reaction you see when a player moves on from a club. This has certainly been a bit more than that though - plenty ridiculing going on and a lot of people desperate to highlight how bad a player they think he is.

But for some of us there's an element of relief that you're free to have a go at a player you were hesitant to when he was representing your club. Tanser falls into that category: someone a few fans were never convinced about, but we didn't have really anyone else until Booth took his place. I certainly thought that when he arrived he was a weak replacement for Easton (at his best), and was coached into the first team. Tanser has good qualities – dead ball situations, decent touch – but kind of shrugging my shoulders that he's gone.

Yes he was.

Tanser was a complete liability when he first came to the club. He came onto a game 2 seasons ago and everyone was impressed in how he had developed into a good player, that never lasted though, last season he wasn't great and rightly lost his place to Booth. His faults and attributes have been well documented in here so I'll not go into it. Hopefully this is the last post about Tanser, I've never been his biggest fan so I'll still give him the same abuse, just now he'll be in black and white.

In League games between the clubs last season , Tanser started every game , Booth was an unused sub in every game. Is it not the case that Tanser  dropped out of the team when he let it be known that he wouldn't be re-signing ?

Possibly but he didn’t tend to start against the big teams

As said, Tanser made way for Booth in the bigger games.

The point about players leaving us and going on to do well is actually pretty interesting, mainly because it doesn't really happen.

Jason Holt - Only on loan so may not really count, has done well with Livi but nothing extraordinary

Callachan - Decent player in a relegated team, now signed for another team who may get relegated

Drey Wright - Has been "swanson-ed" a bit at Hibs, doesn't have a key role, not making big impacts from the bench

Matty Kennedy - 1 goal and 3 assists in a really dull Aberdeen side, may still kick-on under a new boss

Tony Watt - 3 goals and 7 assists at Motherwell, playing fairly similar to his time at Saints, some nice moments but notthing special

Stefan Scougall - Playing League One with Alloa next season?!

George Williams - Bit part player for Forest Green, now non-league with Grimsby Town

Aaron Comrie - likely found his level in the Championship

Danny Swanson - rinse and repeat fail and return on multiple occasions

Joe Shaughnessy - Ruined by his agent/Dad as no club down south wants anything to do with him, now captain with a bottom 6 side so hasn't "kicked on"

Blair Alston - One of Tommy Wright's 39 signings this season, but trending downwards

Michael Coulson - May have turned into a 30 goal-a season player in the English 8th tier, stats are sketchy

Keith Watson - Has done well to have a top flight career after bad injuries, hasn't kicked on though

Liam Craig - left to relegate Hibs and only played well again on return

Stevie May - Did well first season, fell out of favour and injuries ruined it all, legend and love him but he is back here for a reason

Brian Easton - Harder situation to assess but still hasn't really done well

Steven Maclean - Left to relegate Hearts and then came back to turn Kane into a double-winning number 9 - 100% worth it

MOH - Was never a good fit at rangers on or off the park, always played his best football for Saints

Rowan Vine - lols

The exceptions

Gwion Edwards - Now a very good League One/Lower Championship player down south, from memory he didn't want to stay here because he felt he was worth more playing time and he may have been correct

Marcus Maddison - only in the youth team and his attitude may be horrific but turned into a cracking player

Gregory Tade - The infamous "perfect player without the ball" suddenly went nuts in Romania with Cluj with a 20 goal season, then went to Steaua and well out with the big sh*t Gigi Becalli who realised he may not be the best player in the world, looks like he got a nice payday out of Qatar too.

Nigel Hasselbaink - Had some good spells jumping between Holland and Israel by the look out of it, 7 goals in 5 games at international level for Surinam, looks like he's having a good career

Probably forgotten an absolute clanger here but the departures very rarely come back to haunt us

We wanted to keep him but not at any cost  and there is no way he deserved to be one of our higher paid players..He is a good enough attacking wingback but is sadly lacking defensively.. Our upturn last year coincided with the return of Gordon and Tanser being replaced in the starting 11 by Booth..It was pretty much the same this season with Tanser being dropped for Booth around the time we started seriously gaining points...Tanser is a lucky man he has two cup winners medals but was on the bench as an unused sub on both occasions..Also he was rarely trusted to start against the " Big Teams " with Booth again being seen as a better option...Make of that what you will..No bitterness just facts

Don't think it's fair to say he wasn't trusted against big teams. He probably offers more than Booth in attack*, but isn't as good defensively. Suspect that's why he didn't get games against eg the Old Firm.

* Though if Tanser had played in the cup final Rooney would never have scored that goal.

I was maybe being a bit harsh on him there

We're obviously in a reasonable place in terms of replacing Tanser as Booth has already slotted into the team and proven himself.  With Booth being able to cover left centre back, I'd be happy with a young up and coming left back if there are any out there that would start as back up. Along the lines of the young right back Smith (?) we signed for half a season from Preston a few years back, but preferably on a permanent deal.

Our last two left back signings; Booth and Tanser, were signed on reasonable terms as back up to the established no. 3 at the time. Tanser to Easton, and Booth to Tanser, and it's fair to say both were very underwhelming signings at the time but have absolutely proven to be worthwhile, so a similar move and therefore keeping the majority of the budget for other areas of the team and tying down some of our young ballers would be ideal.  Lets be honest, with the winning culture at St Johnstone, we could sign someone who'd never tried football before and after a couple of seasons he'd probably end up being sought after by half the teams in the league.

Not really sure where this Tanser not being picked for big games or against The OF chat is coming from though, could show countless clips of him getting ragdolled by Forrest or Morelos!  Think him and Booth were fairly level pegging for the manager with differing qualities,  but when it was clear Tanser wanted to leave in February time, added to him getting injured, Booth took over and was excellent, arguably MOM in the SC semi final.

FWIW theres plenty of raw young full backs floating around England just now.

21yo called Reece Hutchinson just been released by Burton, played almost 50 League One games for them before dropping out the side this season. Looks raw as f**k but basics are there.

Type of cheap punt you chuck at Davidson and see what he can make out it, IMO.

Ali Koiki looks even better. Quick as f**k too.

They sound like the types we should be looking at, not that far away from where ST was in his career when he joined.  And he's now got a big money move to st mirren, so if that's not an incentive for an up and coming young left back to join us I don't know what is!

Yeah I doubt we'll find an experienced LB to come in, unless the rumours of McMann going elsewhere are bollocks. Decent left backs are in demand it seems.

Have faith Davidson can defensively polish any full back turd if you give him a season with them, so finding someone with the raw tools, and who wouldn't be demanding first team football straight away, seems solid. Think we'll need a more attack minded LWB if we do sign Brown, as I'm not sure we'll get much attacking wise out of him so need a balance.

Appreciate that entire post might be bollocks.
