Acceptable for a ref to tell a player to 'shut the f*** up'?

Totally acceptable imo. Refs get dogs abuse from team players, officials and supporters constantly. As soon as a reply is made then the other side go all "woe is me" reaction.

If you cant take it back then "shut the f**k up."

I never had a problem with a ref speaking in such terms as long as he didn't mind a bit back. This meant players were treated like adults and the ref inevitably gained respect.

Can't help but too agree with you, it was amazing how precious a few of the players got about it.

Think they maybe lose a bit of credibility but must be very difficult to bite their tongue. Always have felt the level of abuse referees receive is a disgrace and swearing at a red should rightly result in a yellow or red card depending on severity
