Don't know what Saints plans are but if they don't get promoted it will be for good business reasons. There will be squeals of lack of ambition but that always comes from people who see that as somebody throwing money at clubs (never the complainers money)

Rurality is the issue here folks. Will people say Threave have bottled it as well ? They have given the LL two seasons and have drawn a blank. I think common sense will prevail in both cases. There are clearly issues around travelling, particularly for mid week games for part time players who have real day time jobs !!

LH you have it totally right.    Teams in Dumfries and Galloway cannot compete with those in the Central Region.   Shake a tree in Glasgow or Edinburgh and players fall out of it.   Shake a tree in Dumfries and Galloway and all that falls out of it is next doors cat.

Lowland League will be looking for teams to join if neither are involved with it. potentially take Edusport in there which I presume is there goal allowing them to play the games at Hamilton.

Your spot on LH we already have 3 L.L.teams competing for limited players that are good enough for this level. There simply aren't enough players to choose from. The top south teams are fighting with the 3 LL teams for the same players. If you put the best players all in one team it would be a great team.

Apparently CSS,Hawick RA and Edusport have all applied to join LL,decision next month. They were only looking for one new side to take it to 16 clubs but if Threave are dropping down they'll be looking for 2.

Plenty teams to fill the spaces then.

Dalbeattie Star seemed to have handled LL better than Threave.

Not 100% sure of your meaning but Edusport played at Hamilton Palace last season, they're at Annan currently.

I think what they mean is that Edusport will be able to play their home games in the Central Belt because more LL teams are up that way, as opposed to playing in the South where Hamilton is too far for opposing teams meaning they have to come down to Annan.

Whether or not their "home" ground is up to license standards is another question however

Interesting, if true.

We get perpetual moans from some around Stranraer that our team should have more locals in it, or even be made up entirely of locals. These people won't accept suggestions that our league position would fall dramatically if we did this.

Now here we have posters suggesting that there may not be enough talent in D&G to allow a team to compete at Lowland League level, let alone in any of the SPFL divisions.

I don't think the lack of talent is an issue but te quality players are thinly spread throughout the region. The issue with a few players who can operate at LL level (or higher) is the onerous travelling involved. There is no easy way to get to most of the LL clubs for the Stewartry teams.

I made the point on another form that football in the Border country is currently in a torrid state. Lots of reasons for it - not all of which are directly down to football itself, young men moving to the cities is a societal issue for example - but it's perfectly clear, and some have been saying it for a while.

Look at the Lowland League this season. Bottom 7 places are occupied by the 6 Borders / Dumfries & Galloway clubs, plus Preston Athletic... Top 5 in EOS League are Edinburgh clubs (admittedly Hawick will probably overtake Spartans EOS). Were it not for the divisions being amalgamated, Peebles would have been the only Borders club in the EOS Premier this season - and were they to redivide for next season only Hawick and Peebles would be in the top rung.

Since the Scottish Cup went all-in in 2007 these are the only ties which Borders / Dumfries & Galloway clubs have won against clubs outside the area:

Coldstream ... none

Crichton ... none

Dalbeattie ... beat Lossiemouth (2008-09); Golspie (2014-15)

Gala ... beat Golspie (2011-12); Glasgow Uni (2013-14)

Gretna ... none

Hawick ... none

Newton Stewart ... beat Fort William (2013-14)

St Cuthbert ... beat Fraserburgh (2010-11); Keith, Edinburgh Uni (2012-13); Burntisland (2015-16)

Selkirk ... beat Civil Service (2007-08); Preston (2009-10); Glasgow Uni (2012-13)

Threave ... beat Stenhousemuir (2007-08); Golspie (2008-09); Whitehill (2009-10); Edinburgh City (2010-11); Rothes (2013-14); Preston (2014-15)

Vale of Leithen ... beat Glasgow Uni, Civil Service (2007-08); Edinburgh Uni (2009-10), Girvan, Cove Rangers (2011-12)

Wigtown ... beat Civil Service (2010-11); beat Preston (2011-12)

So average 2 wins per club over 9 seasons... 40% came against universities and the 'miscellaneous triplet' of Burntisland, Girvan and Golspie... 70% against those clubs plus Civil Service, Fort William and Preston.

Who knows what the answer is, though.

Unless Hamilton Palace has been revampted in the past two years it will be a long way from meeting the criteria. The layout and ownership then would have made it impossible.
