Soor Plooms
Good day - good crowd - some bad penalties! The Lowland League Cup Final Sunday 15th May 2016 3g Arena Netherdale Gretna 2008 0 East Kilbride 0 (aet) (East Kilbride win 4-2 on penalties) The arrival of the Flying Scotsman wasn't the only event to draw a visitors to Galashiels on Sunday. The Scottish Lowland League Cup Final took place at Netherdale and a healthy crowd of 250 saw East Kilbride overcome Gretna 2008 to retain the trophy after a penalty shoot-out. The game was a re-run of last season’s affair and was the third year in succession that the final was held at Gala Fairydean Rovers Netherdale Ground. A year ago Kilbie had emerged as comfortable 3-1 victors but Stuart Rome’s Gretna proved stuffier opponents on this occasion and pushed the favourites all the way. On 80 minutes the Raydale Park side thought they had stolen a late lead following a powerful header from Daniel Michael Wadge. However after consulting his stand-side assistant referee Craig Napier ruled that the Gretna man had been in an offside position. East Kilbride, who had restricted Champions Celtic to a narrow 2-0 victory in this season’s Scottish Cup created a number of chances but found Gretna keeper Vincent Parker in superb form. The game finished goalless after 90 minutes and even an additional 30 minutes of extra time could not separate the sides. With the clock ticking down the impressive Anton Brady of East Kilbride crashed a shot off the underside of the bar but it would take penalty kicks to decide the winners. Both teams missed their initial spot kicks but East Kilbride held their nerve to triumph by 4 goals to 2. The deciding spot-kick was despatched by Bernard Coll to spark celebrations amongst the large East Kilbride contingent in the Netherdale stand. Martin Laughlin’s side received the trophy from Lowland League Chairman and former top-flight referee Andrew Waddell to cap a fine season for the men from K-Park. The_Judge
Didn't make the journey but a good end to a very good season for EK. Expectations and targets continually growing and a proper tilt at the title must be the aim for next season.
