Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

I mean... this was our form under Alexander before our captain went on strike, his deputy lasted 20 minutes on the pitch and the rest of the team's legs started falling off.

Like... aye, maybe this rut will spiral out of control, Alexander won't be able to turn it around and we'll lose the next 6 on the trot. But it does feel a bit like folk are deliberately ignoring some pretty massive extenuating circumstances as an excuse to be incredibly hasty with the doomsday scenario predictions.

Exactly this.

There were some things I disagreed with on Saturday, for example Carroll (as much as he was badly at fault for the first goal) and Maguire (when Polworth managed to stay on) were nowhere near the worst offenders to find themselves hooked.

Other than McGinley, coming back from a concussion who we've already discussed, I genuinely don't think anyone can turn round here and say they would have played a different starting eleven on Saturday. Further to that, I don't think anyone could've seen the team come out on Saturday and be confident that it was one that was going to win. Granted, I'm sure we all thought we'd have more than five touches in St. Johnstone's box, but still.

Carson
O'Donnell Gallagher Mugabi Grimshaw
Campbell Donnelly O'Hara
Lawless Smith Seedorf

Don't get me wrong, I don't fancy that front three much, but we arguably had a better side unavailable on Saturday than we had available.

Hopefully we have a few bodies back for the St. Mirren game, because if it's a similar team, I think it'll be a similar outcome.

Aye I get that. I think the galling bit of the last two games is that we've failed to lay a glove on either Accies or St Johnstone. Not that I was expecting 6 points but christ at least make teams work for win.

For any Motherwell supporter, the last 2 games were pretty bruising and so I'm not surprised there is a lot of negativity around - I'm feeling it myself TBH

The Accies game was the worst of the two for me - O'Donnell giving away a penalty and getting sent off aren't extenuating circumstances for what followed but rather are just another glaring example of piss poor defending and decision making that have been costing us constantly since the european games. We've all seen teams with 10 men (usually against us!) make a game of it but we simply failed to do that.

The St Johnstone game did have an excuse in that the defence and midfield were decimated but I'm not so willing to brush aside the utterly limp performance that we got against a team 1 place above us in our worst season in years. The normal rule in football when there is a big squad is supposedly that players coming in "stake their place" or whatever cliche you fancy - but we looked utterly beaten as soon as they got their nice opening goal (and arguably beforehand) and no-one looked like they were interested in keeping their place for Wednesday (Polworth being a perfect example).

My biggest hope is still that we *have* looked decent at times since Alexander came in and we've got it well within us to outperform 2 of Killie, Accies and County until the end of the season. My biggest fear is that look we have when the opposition score first.

Watching the first goal back I see that everyone’s favourite scapegoat (certainly mine) Ricki Lamie was blocked by Carroll when he went out to engage the Saints player.  Melamed may have skipped round him anyway but that goal was all about Carroll getting it wrong all over the pitch.

Unimportant but thought I would defend Lamie on this occasion he certainly is in no position to defend himself

I just realised there’s an international break after the Livi game on 6th March, with the first game back being Killie in the final game before the split.

Very much clutching at straws here but I’m hoping this break might come at a good time for us given the injury situation. I’d feel a lot better going into the final 6 fixtures against bottom 6 sides with the likes of Bevis, Gallagher, Campbell, O’Hara, Lawless and maybe Donnelly back involved in some form or another.

One wonders if our skipper makes a spectacular recovery with Scotland games coming up. Putting my dark thoughts aside I bloody hope so !

Fair play to Kelly for going to town here.

Is that not Kelly you can here after the 2nd goal goes in?

Fair to say, he doesn't sound overly impressed with the defending(or lack of) in front of him.

Totally agree.

You could argue that since Galllagher has gone AWOL Lamie has actually been our most consistent defender (not that it would be that hard).

At least he looks like he could give a shit even though he's been absolutely slaughtered since his first game and could just have said f**k it why bother and join the "18" , so kudos to him for that at least.

On a lighter note, I noticed it was somehow 9 years ago today(mental) since Higdon went flying through the air to score that overhead kick against Hibs-best quality I could find on YouTube.

McCall's Motherwell at their entertaining best, managing to ship 3 soft goals but still somehow winning the match.

Mental that Matt Doherty has gone from playing with Pat Fenlon's Hibs team to joining Spurs for £15 million.

Not to divert away from the nostalgia, which I am very much for but apropos of nothing I notice we binned the 'stick-a-camera-in-a-player's-face' bit post-match on Saturday.

Is that the first time we've ditched it this season? Fair play if so.

Why is Harry Smith currently in London?. I assume the team were training today and I didn't see him on the Injury List.

Given he's not been on the bench for the past few games I'd guess he's injured so is probably down there to see a specialist or such. We shipped Turnbull off to that there London.

I doubt he's away for a day out like.

We ditched it once before - it was noticeable at the time.

We've not done our Motivational Quote of the Week yet either - they might be hiding from that too - I would suggest "Trying Not To f**k It Again".

Michael Higdon is easily my favourite player in all my time supporting Motherwell. For all the outstanding goals and his GIRFUY to Neil Lennon, his best moment has to be getting arrested at the Scottish POTY awards for trying to square go (I think) David Mccracken.

Also, how is that reporter pronouncing Ojamaa [emoji23]?
