Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

If there's anything in the KVV rumours then it's going to be too lucrative a deal for him to turn down at this stage of his career and could really set him up financially. Would be a huge blow to us though, to lose him before we're sure of safety.

Apparently Scunthorpe turned down a 4 million bid for KvV from a Chinese team in 2017.

In fact, he mentions it in an interview with MFC in 2021........

"Kevin was coined with the nickname ‘Budget Bergkamp’ by the fans for his eye-catching displays at the club, and an impressive goal return attracted interest from the Chinese Super League in 2017.

A mooted fee of £4m was knocked back for the Dutch striker, with Scunthorpe reportedly holding out for an offer twice as much.

“I wanted to punch the wall,” Kevin says as he reflects on a whirlwind time in his career. “£4m for me? I would drive myself anywhere for that.

“Even though I had a great season, it was unbelievable money. Scunthorpe thought there was more to get, but I think the Chinese club might’ve been offended by that.

“I wouldn’t say there is bad blood between the Scunthorpe chairman and myself, but I do think, what if? What if it did work out and they got it over the line?”"

If KVV gets an amazing offer from China (and we get the requisite silly money transfer fee) - there is zero chance it won't happen as we've rarely stood in anyone's way (Carson aside).

Given that we are far from being safe and relying heavily on his goals, it would effectively be a straight Money Vs Relegation gamble as it's a decision that could very easily lead to us going down. If it comes down to a risk based decision - the size of the transfer fee would be the key thing,

If we decided to say "no" - the size of the strop that would occur would register about 8 on the richter scale - so if this rumour has any basis in fact, there's probably no upside to it from an on-field point of view.

If I was in the hot seat, I'd be spinning negotiations out on a technicality until after the Livi and Utd games....

If Kev goes for more than we got for Turnbull then we’ve entered some crazy metaverse and I don’t know if I want to be part of it.

Would it be poetic that his fee could be the final part of the Alexander and Lucetti settlement compo ……

I read it on here and I told Joe, Joe told Tony, when I told Tony he confirmed that he had now heard it from 2 sources which was enough corroboration for us, so deal on?

Or rehash of an old story?

I hope he stays atleast until the end of this season. I had no doubt that he would be gone this summer especially since he's got such a good record this season. A good fee would be icing on the cake.

Hopefully we stay up and we properly sort out the squad in the summer to avoid a similar situation like this season) loads of duds and having to rely on a single strike 90% of the time).

I doubt it will be crazy money, as it's difficult to play hardball when it's the chance for someone in the last few years of their career to set themselves up for life. An occasionally miffed KVV splits our support, so I can't imagine what a furious one would do.  Saying that, I doubt it's a "nominal fee" either.

Hopefully we can hold onto him until the end of the pre split games.

Some sort of training compensation, which is based on how long he's been with us. Don't know if first team games and international appearances factor into it though. We've negotiated with clubs in the past to get a smaller fee with addons for future sales. I'm reluctant for us to do that though, since outside of Marvin J we haven't done too well in that area.

It's a shame we couldn't get him on a longer contract, but I don't think there's anything we can do if someone is dead set on leaving.
