LOWLAND LEAGUE - TO BE OR NOT TO BE THAT IS THE QUESTION

Susan Boyles Cat

Reasons not to get promoted to or stay in the Lowland League:

COST:

Expence of coaches to away games £6000 per season.

Expence of Referees and Assistants (incl travel expences) £4000 per season

Expences of Management and Players wages/kit at least £1000 each 18 man squad plus management = £20000

INCOME:

Average attendance (100) at Home Games at £5 each = £5000

Expences not taken into account:

Fuel and Light, Ground maintenance, telephone,/broadband/admin

He is talking about Lowland League expenses and income. The setup is obviously going to differ from what's doable in SPFL4 when £40,000 or so handouts from the SPFL and money from the League Cup and the Challenge Cup are not available.

Given it's a Stranraer fan I presume this feline is comparing with the South of Scotland League? Obviously travelling will be costlier and match officials a bit pricier as you get assistants at all games and ref's tariff will be a band higher... That's true of any move from a lower level to a higher one, though.

The worst kept secret in Dumfries and Galloway.   Threave Rovers to the South of Scotland League.   Saint Cuthberts staying in the South of Scotland League (can't connect their toilets before the 6th of Jun 16, to get a SFA Licence).   Scott Wilby to be the Threave Manager.

How can Threave do that, if there is no relegation? They only go down if there is a club to replace them from either the EoS or SoS league and as things stand it sounds like neither champion can do so as they won't be licensed by the time things get finalised. To return to the SoS league for next season would Threave not have to give up their licensing and hence their full membership of the SFA and automatic Scottish Cup entry?

Long Time Lurker.   Once Threave knew they were finishing bottom in the LL they had 48 hours to reapply to remain in the LL (they did not reapply).   The cost of being in the LL will always be prohibitive to clubs in Dumfries and Galloway.   Many players cannot afford to play LL due to to Saturday working shifts.   Why are Saints happy to stay in the South of Scotland League.     There are no Arabian Multi-Billionaires between Gretna and Stranraer (if there are they are keeping a very low profile).

Maybe for some it's just a case of can't afford the cake so no point worrying about the taste.

  • 2 weeks later...

Susan Boyle's Cat has made some important points about Cost & Income. However, 3 licensed clubs are seeking promotion, and will be making presentations next week to fill the 2 Lowland League vacancies. They each have something to offer the SLL:

* Hawick Royal Albert has improved significantly both on and off the field during the past year or so. Hawick is a large border town, with a population in excess of 14,000, which should comfortably sustain LL football. The club has a good/established ground and floodlights

* Civil Service Strollers has a long history, and is understood to be a financially stable club. It has worked hard to obtain its SFA licencing after having been unsuccessful last year

* Edusport Academy had a successful season in the South of Scotland League, albeit without an established fan base. It is giving French students both an academic and football education.

We await the outcome of the Lowland League meeting (on 6th June) with interest.

None of which has any business being at the 5th tier of Scottish football.

I agree if it wae young scots players then maybe. Edu shud play in the development leagues with boys there own age. Plus if they werent good enough to win s.o.s.l. Then dont think they would be good enough for LL. Plus they have no fan base, dont think the locals wud gt behind a french.team

My understanding is that Edusport have absolutely no travelling support.   Furthermore, they have to rely on local Scottish players during holiday periods (Christmas/New Year etc) when French players return to France.   Do they really deserve a slot in the LL.   I think not at the expence of the other teams being touted as possible new members of the LL.
