It's more likely that he wants to see what players are up for it, as surely every player will put themselves in it. If not the manager knows they're a shitebag and not up for it. It might also show if there are any rifts. Ultimately it's probably a ruse in an attempt to build team spirit. He'll pick his own team and claim it's (gasp, coincidence!) the same as the player's one and it shows that they're all on the same wavelength and trust each other. For all you know he's done it before. A wee confidence booster or something for him to say before the match, maybe even individually, to each player that they had x number of votes cast from their own teammates to be starting.
