The Partick Thistle thread

Recommended Posts

The next manager 100% will be someone who is wanting to play 'the thistle way' of past, the same philosophy that got the club into the top 6. The board weren't happy with Archie's style of play for the last 12 months. Gerry coming from his youth academy background wouldn't let someone come in who would dingy the academy. There is no chance Robbie Neilson will take it though

Good luck to Gerry and Scott though. Scott Allison is a terrific coach and motivator, which this group of players need.

I don't think there can be many (any) thistle fans that would have wanted things to turn out differently.

I remember Archie bombing (slowly) but skilfully down that left wing as a teenager. But something had to give. I hope they think long and hard about a replacement. Thankyou Archie for some great memories.

As much as Archibald's sacking has been both necessary and inevitable, I felt a tinge of sadness reading the club statement. He's an icon of the club and seems a very nice, likeable guy.

Ultimately though I suspect the latter has contributed more than anything to his terrific record fizzling out and crashing into the arse end of the Championship. Loyalty to players like Bannigan, Fraser, Dumbuya, Elliott, Booth and so on - either crippled or just not good enough - did us no favours when even mediocre replacements would likely have kept us up last season.

If he'd left in 2017 or even had another chance at last season's summer window, I doubt most fans would have much trouble putting him up with Lambie in recognising his contribution. As it is he lost control of the playing squad in the end and looked to compensate by going to the comfort blanket of the old 2012-13 formation, which the current squad clearly aren't well suited to.

As such, the squad is now crying out for a breath of fresh air which can only come from a new manager. In the meantime, I've no idea who would best suit as a replacement but I'd have a preference for a 4-4-fucking 2 specialist. Get Archibald back into the heart of the defence while we're at it.

Should have been emptied as soon as the final whistle was blown at the second leg of the play-off final against Livi.

Should have been emptied after the 5-1 defeat to Kilmarnock last December.

All feels a bit surreal now that it has happened though. I cant derive any pleasure from this unlike when Dick Campbell was bagged. It’s undoubtedly the correct decision, but sad nonetheless.

Felt like that when Houston went. Sometimes you the guy needs to go, but it doesnt mean you want him to.

I have been a big supporter of Archie and giving him a chance when we got relegated last season but after today and the abject performances especially away this was the right move.

I’d prefer a Thistle man in charge. Someone who knows the club but I’d happily take someone higher profile with a good coaching reputation though if we have the budget for it like a Robbie Nielson.

I do think Lennon and Duffy will apply and McCall would be very interested as he’s long said the only job he’d leave Ayr for would be to come back and get a 2nd chance with us. He does love the club and time he spent here even though he has major personal
Issues. Not least drink and gambling so I’m told.

It will definitely not be Stubbs or Yogi. I can tell you I’ve heard they won’t entertain managers who have a past of falling out with ownership and boards. Yogi is enemy #1 on that front.

We’re quite an attractive club due to our location, our squad is decent and can certainly play much better and we’ve got the new training facility coming next year.

Let’s get behind the team, Gerry and Scott. It’s important this doesn’t define the season and we look to let the players and club know we are behind them.

The club and the first team's performance are what matter. Perhaps being closely attached to a manager is a defect. After all, even at the top European level, the likes of Guardiola, Mourinho and Klopp are just mercenaries. The days of long-time loyal employees like Davie McParland are long gone.

Apparently Ratnamara was darkening the doors of Firhill with his presence yesterday - surely the board wouldn't... would they?

Like many others, I am slightly sad to see AA finally go - he got us to the top flight and kept us there, although it was rarely pretty. He's also a nice guy who loves the club. However, last season was an unmitigated disaster and there is no doubt that he should have walked after our feeble, ignominious relegation.  To have allowed him to "rebuild" in order to (allegedly) "be competitive" and challenge for promotion was massively naive given that by the fag end of last season, when we were, for example, being pumped in vital games by Ross County, Killie etc., he could no longer motivate the team or spring any kind of tactical surprises.

He's never been any good at spotting and recruiting players and there was no reason why that would suddenly change.  Our best players , tellingly, are those who were here before he started (Doolan, Erskine, Bannigan - not Christie elliott though, obviously). This season, our football has been rancid, with the exception of QOS at home, which was fine going forward, and only rancid at the back.  The away at Dunfermline fiasco sadly sums up where he took us to - a disorganised rabble with no right back, having bafflingly been put out defensively to try to steal a point from a bang average side, and which failed to do so because he forgot to get a RB in this summer.  It was a bit like the now infamous cup game against ICT where Lyle Taylor had just returned and yet both he and Doolan were benched at home in favour of Ryan Stevenson.  I was there and couldn't believe what I was seeing.  Thanks for the memories...

Gordon Strachan and Darren Fletcher being touted on that Thistle Facebook group.

Hah.  Your Facebook page is as reliable as ours.  Ikechi Anya and Craig Gordon were my two favourite summer targets.

ETA: one would think Dundee United and Partick will be very much in the same market for candidates.  Jim McIntyre would be a reasonable short term appointment, I would suggest.
