Anyway regardless of whether or not we use the games started or games played stat it is completely irrelevant, at least it is someone with a proven track record and not a risk e.g Taylor Morgan. Welcome to the club Iain, please score hunners of goals.

Yes and that is fab well done sir, still personally don't really feel it is a good stat to use.

There are lies, damned lies and statistics.

Some pundits will mention "x goals in y games", others will say "x goals in y starts".  Both are accepted conventions.

On balance I'd say the latter is more meaningful, because its a bit harsh to judge a striker's record on whether he scores in the last 15 - 20 minutes of a game rather than the full 90.

All in all, the guy looks like a good signing.

Exactly, or for that matter Lister? Could probably of got both of them for the amount we would need to be paying Russell.

If true then not a signing I really understand, why bother saying youth is the way forward and use it to justify releasing fan favourites to then go and sign some other 'journeyman' who has no previous attachment to the club who let's be honest is just going to be going through the motions at this stage, just hope he doesn't turn out to be another Martin Hardie or David Van Zanten #clublegends

You sound like a Sellick supporter!

Iain Russell is an Airdrie supporter is he/was he not? Sure he used to go watch us if not. And he's Ian McMillan's grandson.

Good signing anyway. 4 or 5 more please.

Edited to say just read the link. And yes at least to the grandson bit. To suggest he might just go through the motions is unfair.

This is a good signing, our attack is starting to look pretty good - though we'll still need another or two strikers, I would think.  Still need to get service to them, though - we obviously need a creative presence in the middle of the park, but have we got any wingers signed yet?

To be good enough to win promotion next season we need to be constructing a team that is capable of repeating Ayr's team from this season...  they scored 65 and conceded 47 goals.  IMO, that's a bit slack defensively, but i'm happy to work with that at the moment.   Last season we scored only 48 goals, conceded 50.    The big difference, despite similar goals conceded rates, is that Ayr seemed more capable of beating a bottom of championship team in a playoff...

Last season our league goals were distributed...

Bain  2

Cadden 3

Cox   4

Crighton  4

Fitzpatrick 4

Hunter 2

Thompson 1

Lister 8

Lithgow 3

Mackin 3

Morgan 2

Prunty 4

Watt 7

Hopefully Russell and Ryan can continue their goalscoring escapades,  Russell had 2 spells out last season injured,  maybe league 1 will suit his aging legs.  Both guys may be capable of hitting 15-20 goals each if fully fit and getting a good supply all season.    If Coogans is rumoured to be coming to the club too,  he has that kind of unfulfilled yet potential, though may not be a first choice if he is even signed.  And,  are we going to play 1, 2, or 3 players up front?   Would Ryan and Russell be sharing the no. 9 jersey?

Where will the rest of the goals come from?

So far we have McDonald, Gorman, Brown and Faria signed up who haven't scored and don't look prolific at all.   Fitzpatrick has scored 4 in each of the past 2 seasons and that would seem to be who he is.   Stewart has scored an occassional goal but to think he'd score more than a couple at this stage is wishful thinking.

Still loads of work to go.   Looks like there's a lot of work to be done before we can say if current news is good or bad,  but there's a long way to go.

That's a smashing piece of business, well in. Always really admired Iain Russell as a player, great dribbler of the ball, can play in a number of attacking positions and pretty neat in front of goal too.

Great addition to the team, he can still cut it!

Sorry for questioning why we are signing a 33 year old striker to a club where we are trying to promote youth, narrow minded indeed.

As Alan Hansen once said of Man Utd    "You won't win anything with youths"

True, anyway regardless of my grumblings, a decent signing for this level and a good addition for the club in their first season of full time football, maybe need to temper my expectation of players we will be signing.

Yes and the majority of the team will be youth but you also need experience also and Russell is both a proven goalscorer and has a lot of good attributes to his game and the younger players will only benefit from working alongside Russell. Well done Airdrie FC, credit where credit is due excellent signing. If your reading Iain im glad you signed for us.. <>

Probably because A) he's a proven striker, not only at this level but a higher level, and much better than any youth player we've got or are likely to pick up.

B) You need experience and quality to guide those young players which Russell certainly provides.

A cracking signing. Good goal scorer and a decent footballer too. Him and Ryan have the makings of a good partnership upfront. Rumour that Coogans will be signing too. Will only happen though if they get decent service. Now time to get at least one creative midfielder and a couple of wingers signed up as well as get the defence sorted out.
