I can understand the logic in following a set system for which seed plays which other seed and where, but why did they have to be so rigid with the when?

All the top seeds have Matchday 2 off together. Bearing in mind this is essentially pre-season, this means that our ability to play a friendly during that mid-week gap is limited to either:

1. Other top seeded teams (St. Johnstone, ICT, Partick etc.) - Why would we want to?

2. Highland/Lowland League teams (or lower) - most likely try to play Brora or Clach or someone

3. Foreign opposition.

When by 'foreign' you also mean the same crap English sides who inevitably trawl around Scotland in July every other year, it's hardly a major loss.

I noticed that as well. And totally-not-a-fix that Rangers get the last Saturday off which is clearly the best open date to have from the perspective of arranging an attractive friendly match.

So every single year the second seeds will play the top seeds away!?

Little bit harsh on the Championship that.

Given that most sides league position can remain reasonably consistant over a number of years that could see the same teams having to make repeated journeys to the same few stadiums ... without ever getting to host their illustrious opponents !?

The boundaries of the two seed groups will change quite a lot each year and even if they were constant, the chance of drawing the same top seed would only be once every four years. There would be a few back to back visits but more often than not teams would be going a few years without visiting any ground on League Cup duty more than once (and wouldn't be doing so in the league that season).

It's far better than the 'guaranteed derbies' pitch and effectively permanent groups that were being pitched earlier, which would have turned into a disaster after a couple of years.
