Areas in London that get regularly mentioned and would be considered dreadful such as the aforementioned Stratford, Hackney, Lewisham, Bow, etc are fantastic. They are also generally safe unless you are involved in the local crime related issues. Bow, for example, has a myriad of issues but is a great place with great arts, pubs, restaurants and other facilities. You're trying to look clever here and failing miserably. Keep swallowing a press narrative uncritically and the stereotypical attitude of some Scots that "oh that London is full of crime". Would you describe Paris/Madrid/Rome/Edinburgh as fantastic cities? -

Simmer down now. Edit to add - to answer your 2nd question, I haven't enough experience of any of them to describe them as fantastic or otherwise. No one cares about where you've lived. I'm sure you made a good point in your head though. -

tree house tam
London is fantastic, has everything you need for a big city. If you venture into shite areas you get shite things happening, what do you expect? Personally I like a wee bit of being on edge, gets the blood flowing.
pozbaird
The only problem I have visiting London these days is that the place is so busy it gives me a headache. Love visiting it, go down Friday to Monday for the NFL games, but it is mental busy all the time. By the Monday, I cannot wait to get home to Scotland, where cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh are manageable.

I was last there in 2017 and the downturn since then was apparent. Ruined totally by the Arabs and Russians. Stylish Londoners would not be seen dead there now. Chelsea is just boring and Notting Hill is on the way down too. Marylebone is the new smart area.

Fuctifano
Going in a couple of weeks for the first time in 3 years Friday afternoon to Sunday night. Only question relates to Oyster: is it best just to sign up for an account online and use your debit card as contactless pay as you go with the daily caps or get a pass of some kind? I've got an old top up card lying about in the house but I assume it's next to useless now. We're staying in zone 1, arriving by train into Kings Cross, and won't be going any further out than the new Spurs stadium (going for NFL) if any of that info helps. No need to take oyster or buy any tickets. Brilliant system.
Alan Stubbs
Does anyone have any tips for late-license boozers (or areas with plenty of such boozers in them); preferably ones that are fairly easy to reach on the Jubilee line? Looking for somewhere to continue getting jaked after Josh Taylor at the 02. Cheers.

You’ll need to get off the Jubilee line and head for Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus or Tottenham Court Road. It’ll only be one or two stops anyway and a couple of minutes walk.

Your hotel may have a residents bar as well if you don't get in anywhere. Looking at the news this information may be useless now.
pozbaird
Not long back from back-to-back weekends in London for the NFL at Wembley. So much construction going on around the Westminster area that Westminster Bridge was even more of a fcuking pain-in-the-arse than normal. Took a walk past Parliament to see the ‘Glastonbury-esque’ sea of flags on poles, and the Brexit protestors. On TV, all you see in the background are the sea of flags. On closer inspection, I reckon 99% of the people standing at the flags ‘protesting’ had mental issues. One woman was dressed as Queen Victoria, complete with a tin-foil orb. Another bloke was dressed like that auld duffer who used to be the England football team mascot. A woman in a yellow hi-vis vest had scrawled on it ‘toot your horn if you are in favour of Britain’. In what respect love? In favour of Britain leaving, staying, or maybe winning Eurovision? Gie’s a clue. There was another bloke just shouting at anyone ‘decide! decide! decide!’. Poor souls looked like they simply craved attention, and were getting a kick out of tourists taking their photos. Needed Laura Kuenssberg to come along and give them a kicking, IMHO. If Laura is into skelping people with mental issues that is. She may, or she may not, be up for that sort of activity. Honest_Man#1
Hotel prices have gone through the roof post-Covid. Can’t even get a 3 star hotel in a relatively central location for under £150 a night when I’m heading down.
